Making a Dream Come True for Autistic Children: The “MIT” Yellow Duckling Swims into Shanghai’s Mirror Lake

The globally popular yellow duckling’s world tour isn’t over yet! After visiting 22 cities around the world, from now until November 23, an 18-meter-tall yellow duckling will meet the public in Century Park in Shanghai’s Pudong New Area. “Father of the Yellow Duckling” Florentijn Hofman expressed his hope that the exhibition would encourage people to care more about autistic children.

Although the ticket price hike by the organizers sparked controversy before the launch, the yellow duckling still made its debut successfully in Mirror Lake within the park. According to mainland media reports, Hofman said the idea for the Shanghai exhibition came from a letter written to him by Yan Yan, a child with autism, who hoped to see the adorable yellow duckling in person in Shanghai.

Hofman also said that after receiving the letter, he not only visited Shanghai especially to meet these children but also set the theme of this exhibition as “Childhood Innocence, Care, and Joy.” In addition to hoping that visitors could understand his creative concept, he also aimed to encourage everyone to care for and help these autistic children.

Another noteworthy point is that the yellow duckling in Shanghai is actually “Made in Taiwan,” with manufacturing, installation, and maintenance all handled by Taiwan. A backup version was also produced. To prevent the duckling from being “deflated” again, it has been placed 30 meters away from visitors on the lake for everyone to admire.
