Qingpu Water Library

The Qingpu Water Library is a national AA-level tourist attraction.

The Qingpu Library was first established in December 1959. After two relocations, it moved into Puyang Pavilion on Xiayang Lake in July 2007, and the new library officially opened on August 28.

Strolling along the shores of Xiayang Lake in the central urban area of Qingpu, you can see from afar this unique building—the Water Library—designed by renowned architect Ma Qingyun, quietly standing in the middle of the water. It forms a visual dialogue with the museum across the lake, both becoming iconic structures of Qingpu New Town. This modern-style library covers a construction area of 8,000 square meters, consisting of two undulating buildings interlaced together, resembling two giant waves gracefully extending from the east and west toward the center of the lake. A “lake corridor” extending from the main body of the library connects this oversized structure tightly to the lakeshore.

The most distinctive feature of the Water Library is its approximately 4,000-square-meter open rooftop garden, where greenery spread across the wavy roof offers a relaxing experience. There are four staircases on each of the east and west sides, allowing visitors to climb up to the rooftop garden for a view of the lake after reading—a unique perk of this library. Dining/Accommodation/Shopping: Food and drinks are not provided inside the library. On the first floor of Puyang Pavilion, right at the library entrance, there is a Macau Hot Pot restaurant and a Blue Mountain Café. Shanghai Tourist Line 4: Board at Exit 5 in front of Shanghai Stadium, get off at the Telecom Building in Qingpu urban area, then walk south along Huqing South Road for over 200 meters.

Bus Hu-Zhu Line: Board at Shanghai West Bus Station, get off at the Telecom Building in Qingpu urban area.

Hu-Qing Special Line: There are special lines to Qingpu from the intersection of Jinling Road and Pu’an Road, and from the intersection of Lao Chengdu North Road and Dagu Road.

Hu-Qing Express Special Line: Board at the intersection of Dagu Road and Chengdu Road, travel along the Yan’an Elevated Road and A9 Expressway to Qingpu without any stops along the way. Ticket/Opening Hours Reference Reading Room: 9:00–17:00
