Liberation Bridge

Liberation Bridge is a Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Located in Zhujiajiao Town, Qingpu District, it spans the Dianpu River. In the fifth year of the Longqing era of the Ming Dynasty (1571), the monk Xingchao from Cimen Temple in Zhujiajiao raised funds to build the bridge. By the end of the Qianlong era in the Qing Dynasty, the bridge had collapsed. In the seventeenth year of the Jiaqing era (1812), the monk Jueming from Yuanyin Chan Monastery raised funds to rebuild it. It was a site designated by the monks of Cimen Temple for releasing living creatures, with wooden stakes erected in the water as boundaries. The first day of each lunar month was designated as a release period, hence the name "Liberation Bridge." The bridge is 72 meters long, 7.4 meters high, and 5 meters wide. The spans of the central, second, and third arches are 13 meters, 8.8 meters, and 6.2 meters respectively. The ridge stone on the bridge is carved with eight coiled dragons encircling a bright pearl, rendered in lifelike detail. Stone lions welcoming visitors are sculpted around the top of the bridge, and a stele pavilion stands to the east. It is the largest five-arch stone bridge in Shanghai. In 1987, it was listed as a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit.

It is the largest stone arch bridge in Shanghai. With its exquisite construction and beautiful shape, it is one of the Ten Scenic Spots of Zhujiajiao. As the name implies, Liberation Bridge is associated with the act of releasing living creatures as a form of merit and virtue. Monk Xingchao once stipulated that only fish and turtles could be released under the bridge, and fishing with nets was prohibited.
