Introduction

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town is located in Qingpu District, Shanghai, adjacent to the Dianshan Lake Scenic Area. It is a typical ancient water town in the Jiangnan region, with crisscrossing waterways among its streets and alleys, offering a very elegant environment. Zhujiajiao Ancient Town is not large, and walking is sufficient to explore it. A casual stroll around the entire town takes about half a day. Upon entering from the southern entrance, you will first arrive at Zhuxi Garden and the Humanities Art Museum. Zhuxi Garden is a small and exquisite garden, now open to the public for free. The Humanities Art Museum is a uniquely designed modern white building that showcases the local history and culture of Zhujiajiao through oil paintings and sculptures.

After passing the Humanities Art Museum, you will reach North Street, bustling with pedestrians. The street is lined with numerous snack shops where you can try famous local treats such as Grandma’s Zongzi, Ancient Town Glutinous Rice Balls, Braised Pig’s Trotters, and a variety of delicate pastries.

Strolling north along North Street, you’ll find several uniquely designed small bridges on the right, such as Yongfeng Bridge and Tai’an Bridge. Across the river is Caohe Street, which features attractions along the waterfront including the Daqing Post Office, Wangchang Memorial Hall, City God Temple, and Yuanchen Zen Temple, all of which can be visited one by one. In addition to the attractions, there are also many boutique shops on the street, including the famous “The Future Library” bookstore.

On the right side of North Street, there is a large bridge spanning the main waterway — the famous Fangsheng Bridge of Zhujiajiao. Crossing the bridge leads you to the opposite bank of Caogang River, where smaller waterways still crisscross the area, with boutique shops and various snacks lining the riverbanks. The most notable attraction in Zhujiajiao, Keyizhi Garden, is also located here. Keyizhi Garden is an exquisite example of classical Jiangnan garden design, incorporating the most essential elements of Jiangnan landscaping, and is well worth a visit.

For a more in-depth experience of the ancient town, consider staying overnight. There are many distinctive inns, youth hostels, and hotels near Caohe Street and Keyizhi Garden, with prices ranging from tens to hundreds of yuan, all set in an elegant and traditional atmosphere.

Free entry. The ancient town itself is free to enter, but tickets for individual attractions and boat rides can be purchased as part of attraction combo tickets. Four-attraction combo ticket (excluding boat ride): 30 RMB; Eight-attraction combo ticket (excluding boat ride): 60 RMB; Eight-attraction combo ticket (including boat ride): 80 RMB.

1. By Car: Urban area – Yan’an Elevated Road – Huqingping Expressway Urban Section (A9 Highway) – Zhongchun Road – Huqingping Highway (National Highway 318)

By Public Transport: Take the Hu-Zhu Express Line, Zhu-Xu Line, Shang-Zhu Line, Qing-Cen Line, Qing-Feng Line, Qing-Shang Line, Qing-Shi Line, Qing-Shang Special Line, Qing-Xiao Special Line, Qing-Zheng Special Line, Qing-Jin Special Line, Song-Zhu Special Line, Hu-Zhu Special Line, Hu-Shang Special Line, Zhujiajiao Route 1, Zhujiajiao Route 2, or Zhujiajiao Route 3 from People’s Square to Zhujiajiao Bus Station. Walk west along Xiangningbang Road to Xinfeng Road, then turn right. The journey takes about 1 hour.
