Former Site of Fengjing People's Commune

The Former Site of Fengjing People's Commune is a cultural heritage site protected by Shanghai Municipality.

The People's Commune was a unique product of a special historical period in modern China. In 1958, a vigorous movement to establish people's communes swept across the nation. Under this trend, the then Fengwei Township (now the rural part of Fengjing Town) also set up a people's commune, initially named the Rocket People's Commune, which was renamed Fengwei People's Commune in March of the following year. This continued until January 1984, when, in accordance with directives from higher authorities, the Fengwei People's Commune reverted to being the government seat of Fengwei Township. For 26 years — a full quarter of a century — this site served as the office of the people's commune.

Behind the commune compound were air-raid shelters dug in response to the call to “dig deep tunnels, store ample grain, and never seek hegemony.” These shelters included a command room, meeting rooms, an ammunition depot… all necessities for wartime preparedness.

Here, one can still feel the intense propaganda atmosphere of that era. Door lintels, decorative walls, and corridor pillars are covered with slogans that were most typical and commonly used at the time. The inner walls of the corridors display photos of Mao Zedong from various historical periods. The rooms have been preserved as they were originally, including the commune director’s office, general offices, the Poor Peasants’ Association, the Youth League Office, the Women’s Federation, the Armed Forces Department, the Public Security Office, and the meeting room. Stepping inside is like stepping back into history.

Here, you can sense the weight of history — prompting reflection among those who lived through that era and offering an intuitive understanding for younger generations who did not. There is also an exhibition hall displaying various ration coupons from that period, such as grain coupons, oil coupons, meat coupons, cloth coupons, industrial coupons, and more.

On April 4, 2014, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government reviewed and announced the Former Site of Fengjing People's Commune as a Shanghai Municipal Cultural Heritage Protection Unit (Document No. Hu Fu Fa [2014] No. 29).
