Spectacular Fire-Fishing Show: Limited-Time "Fire-Jumping Fisherfolk" Performance in Jinshan

Liao Jung-ching, Director of the New Taipei City Government Agriculture Bureau, said that the "Jinshan Fire-Jumping Fisherfolk" is truly an ancient fishing method worth learning about. Nowadays, only four fishing boats in Kuanggang still use this technique. Starting every May, when schools of sardines flood the northern coastal waters, it’s the busiest time for the "Fire-Jumping Fisherfolk" boats. A team of seven works on each boat, each with their own role. They use "sulfur stones" mixed with water to produce acetylene, which is then ignited to create a bright burst of light that attracts schools of sardines to gather and leap. The fish are then scooped up with hand-held nets. It’s called "Fire-Jumping" because of the popping sound made when the fire is lit.

 

Last summer, the New Taipei City Government held six "Fire-Jumping Fisherfolk" performances, which received widespread acclaim. This year, in conjunction with the Fugih Fishing Port Fish Market and timed with the sardine run, they will hold the "Jinshan Fire-Jumping Fisherfolk 'Fishing Fun Night'" events on May 25 and 26 at Kuanggang Fishing Port, and on June 1 and 2 at Fugih Fishing Port from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM—four sessions in total. The activities include performances of the Fire-Jumping Fisherfolk technique, the premiere of a Jinshan Fire-Jumping Fisherfolk-themed dance, harborfront cinema, open-air concerts, and sardine tastings. The public is welcome to come and experience it.
