Soak in Hot Springs Along the Northern Coast: A Gastronomy Guide to Jinshan, Wanli, and Jiufen

Most hot springs in the Jinshan area are sulfur springs, with a few carbonated ones. However, Jinshan Bay Hot Spring Resort was confirmed last year as a rare “chloride spring,” making it the only undersea hot spring in the region, similar in quality to those found at Green Island’s Asahi Hot Springs. Located within the Huanggang Fishing Port, the resort features luxurious hot spring rooms, outdoor spa pools, a large swimming pool, a party barbecue area, an egg-boiling zone, and a concession stand, among other facilities. Visitors can choose their preferred experience. While enjoying the seawater hot spring bath, you can also take in the breathtaking sea view. At night, gaze at the brilliant starry sky and listen to the soothing sounds of the waves. In the morning, enjoy the sunrise over the northern coast.

Thanks to its coastal location, Jinbaoli Old Street has been a bustling market since the Yongzheng era, with various shops packed into its narrow streets. Having survived the Qing Dynasty, Japanese colonial period, and post-retrocession Taiwan, the street’s historic architecture may not be what it once was, but the interplay of old and new buildings still tells the story. It remains a hub for distributing Jinshan’s agricultural produce and houses a variety of shops, making it well worth a visit. The “Duck Meat Shop” is a beloved local eatery. The restaurant sources free-range native ducks raised for 30 days, resulting in meat that’s tender, flavorful, and completely free of fishy taste. Aside from sliced boiled duck, offerings include fried noodles, cold bamboo shoots, pickled vegetable pork tripe soup, and stir-fried squid. Dishes are served in traditional self-service, bulk-style portions. By lunchtime, the place is bustling with activity, and it usually sells out by evening. Come late, and you’ll miss out entirely.
