The Centennial Celebration of the Taiwan Governor-General’s Office in Taichung: Streets Closed for 3D Light Projections That Give Historic Buildings a New Look

The event will begin in November, with the opening ceremony “Welcome Light Concert” taking place on November 1 and 2 at the Taiwan Governor-General’s Office. The opening “Architecture Light Fantasy Show” will feature live interaction between performers and light projections, where magicians conjure magical light spells, instantly constructing the office building from nothing, demonstrating the transformative power of space and allowing audiences to experience the charm of light and shadow interaction firsthand. This will be followed by the specially designed “Glorious Century 3D Light Sculpture Show” to commemorate the building’s centennial, performed by the “MITSO Taiwan Musicians Symphony Orchestra.” Dozens of exquisitely crafted, dazzling scenes and hundreds of visual transitions will narrate the century-long story. Under the night’s light beams, the Taiwan Governor-General’s Office will be transformed into a golden rice field, reimagined as the architectural blueprints drawn by Japanese designers, morphed into a nostalgic old shop, and even re-envisioned as a futuristic high-tech structure. Ingenious time-space transformations and future visions are spectacularly presented through the fusion of sound, light, music, and visuals, showcasing and commemorating the hundred-year legacy of the Taiwan Governor-General’s Office.

On November 8 and 9, the intermediate session “Light War History” moves to the Yanwu Field in Taichung. The shadow warrior “Photon” will revive the martial spirit of the Yanwu Field, traveling through time. The latest virtual interactive technology allows real people and light projections to perform together, combined with live performances of guqin and kendo at the Daohe Six Arts Cultural Hall. Dancers move in harmony with the light, their gestures casting fleeting shadows and ripples that create a fantastical dreamscape where sound, light, reality, and illusion intertwine. On November 15 and 16, the closing session “Time Phonograph” returns to the Taiwan Governor-General’s Office, where the “NTSO Taiwan Symphony Orchestra” leads audiences to revisit the classic “Glorious Century 3D Light Sculpture Show” and “Architecture Light Fantasy Show” to the tunes of timeless old songs. This gives those who missed earlier shows and those wanting an encore another chance to witness the splendid recreation of the century-long legacy, bringing the centennial celebration to a perfect close.

Taichung’s first-ever light sculpture art exhibition takes place in a bustling urban area and is held outdoors. The performance nights at the Governor-General’s Office will involve brief street closures, so attendees are advised to use public transportation. In addition to the light sculpture and fantasy shows, all three events feature “Interactive Architectural Light Painting,” where audiences can not only enjoy cutting-edge light art but also participate in the fun of creating graffiti with light and color on historical buildings together with family members. At the opening event, there will also be a commemorative stamp for the “Architecture. Light. Taichung” centennial celebration and a limited-edition first-day cover from the post office.
