The Tinglin Ancient Cultural Site

The Tinglin Ancient Cultural Site is a protected cultural heritage site of Shanghai Municipality.

The Tinglin Ancient Cultural Site (TinglinGuwenhuaYizhi) is situated on the eastern bank of Zhujia Port in the northwest of Tinglin Town, Jinshan County, covering an area of about 20,000 square meters. Trial excavations were carried out in 1972, and four subsequent archaeological excavations took place in 1973, 1975, 1988, and 1990, with a total cleared area of 1,196 square meters. The site has yielded 23 Liangzhu culture tombs, 2 Song Dynasty tombs, and one stone tool workshop. A significant number of artifacts from the Liangzhu, Maqiao, and Wu-Yue cultures have been unearthed. Discovered in 1966, the site has undergone multiple excavations. The first layer contains relics from the Eastern Zhou and Western Zhou periods, such as gray pottery tripods and slender-handled beans, representing a typical example of the Western Zhou geometric impressed pottery culture in the Taihu Lake region. Artifacts from the fourth layer belong to the early impressed pottery culture of the Maqiao type. The fifth layer contains relics typical of the Liangzhu culture.

The site was discovered in 1966 and covers an area of about 20,000 square meters. Trial excavations were done in 1972, followed by four archaeological excavations in 1973, 1975, 1988, and 1990, totaling a cleared area of 1,196 square meters. The site has produced 23 tombs from the Liangzhu culture, 2 from the Song Dynasty, and one stone tool manufacturing site, along with numerous relics from the Liangzhu, Maqiao, and Wu-Yue cultures.

In the southwest corner of the park, near Zhujia Port, there is a square stone pavilion called Shuju Pavilion, covering an area of 9 square meters.

In 1977, the cultural relics management department designated the Tinglin Ancient Cultural Site as a protected location. In 2014, the municipal government announced it as a cultural heritage protection unit.

Tinglin Town: Tinglin Town is the northeastern gateway of Jinshan District, an industrial hub, and a key commercial center. It is one of the 22 centrally developed towns in Shanghai’s latest urban planning. Located in the northeast of Jinshan District, it is 23 kilometers from Jinshanwei, the district government seat, and 45 kilometers from downtown Shanghai. The administrative area of the town spans 122.27 square kilometers (encompassing the former Tinglin Town, Zhuxing Town, and Songyin Town).
