Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the origins of modern higher education in China, with a history dating back to 1896 when Nanyang Public School was established by the Qing government. It is one of the first two universities founded by Chinese people in modern times. The early buildings of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, as important historical sites and representative architecture of modern Chinese higher education, are currently the only early higher education institution site in China that spans three centuries while retaining both its original location and the site where it was first founded. A variety of buildings in different architectural styles coexist, reflecting to some extent the development and evolution of modern architecture in the Shanghai area. They also bear witness to many major historical events and important transformations in Chinese higher education, serving as physical evidence of social and campus development in modern China. Each of these historic buildings represents the prevailing architectural trends of their time, akin to an architectural museum showcasing a century of changes in modern Chinese architectural styles.

The early buildings of Shanghai Jiao Tong University include: the Old Library, Xinzhong Building, Zhong Building, Xinshang Building, Engineering Building, Science Building, North Building No. 4, Zhixin West Dormitory, Wenzhi Hall, General Administration Building, Gymnasium, Xinjian Building, Sheng Mansion, Huashan Road Gate, Tomb of Revolutionary Martyrs Shi and Mu, and the May Thirtieth Memorial Pillar, totaling 16 heritage structures.
