Northeast Martyrs' Memorial Museum

The Northeast Martyrs' Memorial Museum is a classic site for red tourism and a patriotic education base.

The Northeast Martyrs' Memorial Museum is one of the earlier commemorative museums established in China. It is located at No. 241 Yiman Street, Nangang District, Harbin, a beautiful and renowned city in northern China. The milky-white building features a grand facade with six majestic columns, exemplifying classic Western European neoclassical architecture. The building was initially constructed here by the Northeast Special Administrative Region in 1928 and completed in 1931, originally intended to be used as a library. In July 1933, the building was occupied by the puppet regime in Harbin and became a tool for fascist atrocities under the Japanese puppet authorities. The famous anti-Japanese female hero Zhao Yiman was once imprisoned and tortured here.

After the liberation of Harbin, in order to commemorate the revolutionary martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the War of Resistance against Japan and the Liberation War in the northeast, the People's Government decided to repurpose the former puppet regime building as the Northeast Martyrs' Memorial Museum, which officially opened on October 10, 1948. The museum exhibits the heroic deeds of anti-Japanese heroes such as Yang Jingyu, Zhao Shangzhi, Zhao Yiman, and Li Zhaolin, as well as those from the Liberation War period including Zhu Rui, Dong Cunrui, and Yang Zirong, alongside over a thousand precious cultural relics, historical materials, and photographs. The current collection includes more than 12,000 cultural relics and over 30,000 historical photos, martyr archives, and literature documents (including those of the Heilongjiang Revolutionary Museum).

In 1998, a comprehensive renovation was carried out, increasing the building area to 5,040 square meters and the exhibition area to 2,140 square meters, greatly improving the exhibition environment. After the renovation, more than ten large-scale special exhibitions were launched, including "A Glorious Journey — Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Founding of the Chinese Communist Party Exhibition of Cultural Relics and Photos," "Opposing Darkness and Revering Light," and "Exhibition of Inscriptions and Fine Paintings in the Collection of the Northeast Martyrs' Memorial Museum."

Over the past half-century, the museum has welcomed over 20 million visitors, including foreign guests, overseas Chinese, and compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan from over 90 countries and regions. More than a hundred veteran revolutionaries and notable figures from various sectors have visited the museum and left precious poems and inscriptions. In recent years, the museum has been honored with titles such as "One of the Hundred Patriotic Education Demonstration Bases" by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Culture, and the Communist Youth League Central Committee, as well as "Outstanding Patriotic Education Base," "Moral Education Base," and "Eagle Action Standard Achievement Base" by provincial and municipal authorities. It has become an important base and ideal classroom for patriotic education in the new era.

The Northeast Martyrs' Memorial Museum exhibition opened to the public on October 10, 1948, and began offering free admission on February 21, 2008.
