Introduction: The Seven-Level Pagoda Tower is located to the east of the Temple of Ultimate Bliss. Built in 1924 by the forty-fourth disciple of the Linji School—one of the five major schools of Chan (Zen) Buddhism—it is an octagonal, seven-story brick pagoda in the pavilion style. Standing approximately 37 meters tall, its layout is rare in China. The main facade faces south and is adjoined to a brick-built, flush-gable Hall of Kṣitigarbha. In front of the hall is a three-bay, rolled-roof open hall, with two-tiered, tower-style bell and drum towers on the east and west sides respectively. Windows are found on the eastern, southern, and western facades of the pagoda above the third level, while the rest of the structure features arched niches housing 31 vividly sculpted arhat (Buddhist saint) reliefs. The hall and pagoda are interconnected and house seven bronze statues including three great Buddhas and four bodhisattvas.
