The Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences Horticulture Sub-Institute is a national 3A-level tourist attraction and a national agricultural tourism demonstration site. Located 9 kilometers along Harbin’s Haping Road in the Dongli District, it is intersected north-south by the Haping Road from Pingfang District to Harbin and is accessible via the national highway entrance to the city. It is a comprehensive cultural and scenic tourism area integrating scientific research, education, and sightseeing. Established in 1956, it underwent upgrades in 2002.

Covering an area of 2 million square meters, it is currently the largest modern agricultural research institution in Heilongjiang Province. The site now features attractive attractions such as an ecological restaurant, leisure areas, grapevine-covered pergolas, greenhouse propagation zones, fruit tree areas, and a modern soilless cultivation lettuce plot yielding 150 kilograms in the green cultivation garden. At the heart of the scenic area, fruit trees stretch as far as the eye can see, with blooming flowers, lush grass, buzzing bees and butterflies, and an abundance of autumn fruits. Research on horticultural crops with cold-resistant, disease-resistant, high-yield, and high-quality characteristics, tailored to the frigid zone, has yielded over 150 scientific and technological achievements. Among these, more than 80 have received second-class or higher awards at the national or provincial/ministerial level. A large number of vegetable, fruit, and flower varieties in the “Longyuan” series have been cultivated. For example, Longza Qie No. 2 is the first ultra-early maturing hybrid eggplant variety in Heilongjiang Province; Longzao Mian Pumpkin is the first culinary pumpkin variety in the province; Longyuan Lüchun is China’s first drought-resistant cucumber variety with three or more resistances. The fruit tree varieties cultivated by the sub-institute account for 70–80% of those grown in Heilongjiang Province. The Wuxiang Pear series of varieties ended the history of Heilongjiang not being able to produce high-quality pears, pushing the pear cultivation zone in China more than 600 kilometers northward. Some breeding techniques are leading nationally—for instance, the artificial inoculation identification method during the seedling stage has been incorporated into the national standardized operational procedures for cabbage and cucumber breeding. Space mutation breeding technology was used to develop Yujiao No. 1, setting a precedent in China. Significant progress has also been made in plant artificial immunization methods for disease-resistant breeding.

10,000-square-meter Intelligent Greenhouse: Utilizes advanced cultivation techniques to grow rare northern flowers, with research displays including cyclamen, shade-tolerant flowers, and Phalaenopsis. Hundred-Vegetable Garden: Covers an area of 20,000 square meters, including a pumpkin garden, special vegetable garden, new variety display garden, and sunflower garden. Hundred-Herb Garden: Covers an area of 10,000 square meters, showcasing locally unique Chinese medicinal herbs in Heilongjiang with broad prospects, mainly including Eleutherococcus senticosus, Plantago asiatica, wolfberry, Salvia miltiorrhiza, and Saposhnikovia divaricata.
