Nangang Exhibition Hall

As the only district-level exhibition hall in the city, Nangang Exhibition Hall has received over 20,000 domestic and international visitors in its first year since opening. It is now listed on the third national batch of museums, memorial halls, and patriotic education demonstration bases that offer free admission. The building is also classified as a Class I protected structure in Harbin. This building, originally constructed in 1904, served as the residence of the deputy director of the Chinese Eastern Railway and was later the headquarters of the Fourth Field Army during the Liberation War. In November last year, after protective redevelopment, Nangang District officially transformed the building into an exhibition hall and opened it to the public. The exhibition hall houses over 110 cultural relics, including two national second-grade relics, 27 national third-grade relics, and 38 general national relics. It also displays more than 400 historical photographs from different periods of the city’s history, vividly recording and showcasing Harbin’s hundred-year cultural heritage and development. Since its opening, the exhibition hall has attracted a continuous stream of visitors. It is currently open to the public free of charge every Tuesday through Sunday.

The Nangang District Exhibition Hall in Harbin is located at No. 1 Lianfa Street, Nangang District, Harbin. Built in 1904, it is a representative example of Russian garden-style residences. It is a rare architectural gem in the Art Nouveau style and is classified as a Class I protected building in Harbin. This beautiful two-story building features a brick-and-wood structure with yellow-green tones, conveying a bright and warm atmosphere. Its roof is highly distinctive, with a lively and richly expressive design that evokes a strong sense of daily life. The structure offers transparent views on all sides and enjoys an open vista. Additionally, the building is adorned with seven or eight uniquely shaped chimneys, and the windows come in a variety of distinctive forms, all of which highlight the distinct architectural style of the Art Nouveau movement.

Nangang Exhibition Hall consists of a basement level, two above-ground floors, a tower, and a courtyard, covering a total area of 2,430 square meters. The exhibition space occupies 1,023 square meters and includes seven sections: The Rise of Nangang, Urban-Rural Transformation, Commercial Prosperity, Cultural Diversity, Everyday Life, Architectural Highlights, and Century Events. There is also a circular-screen film screening room. Through detailed historical materials, the exhibition hall employs a comprehensive range of methods, such as historical photographs, charts, models, dioramas, sand tables, simulated scenes, far-infrared interactive installations, 3D animated promotional works, and physical displays, to present the historical development of Nangang from its rise to the period before liberation. It highlights the unique blend of Chinese and Western influences and the coexistence of diverse cultures in Nangang’s history, as well as the fighting spirit of its people in defending the nation against foreign invasion and oppression. Currently, Nangang Exhibition Hall is the first district-level exhibition hall in Harbin.
