Harbin Institute of Technology

Founded in 1920 and located on Xidazhi Street, Harbin Institute of Technology is the earliest higher education institution in Harbin. It originated as the Sino-Russian Industrial Technical School, established specifically to train technical personnel for the China Eastern Railway, with only a few hundred teachers and students at the time. It was later renamed Harbin Institute of Technology.

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, its teaching and research programs grew rapidly, and it has since become a key national university with nearly 10,000 faculty and students. The university includes a graduate school, a management school, 11 departments, 2 divisions, 35 majors, 63 teaching and research sections, 53 laboratories, 4 research offices, 6 research centers, and 2 university-run factories. Twenty-two disciplines (majors) have the authority to confer doctoral degrees, and 46 disciplines can award master's degrees. In addition, there is a large library, a club, a swimming pool, sports fields, and a staff sanatorium. In recent years, the university has achieved breakthrough results in research areas such as far-infrared technology, new laser media, and heavy ion physics. It has also made significant efforts in research related to intelligent computing technologies and successfully developed China’s first arc-welding robot. The institute undertakes many major national scientific research projects.

In 1990, the university had 1,800 faculty members, including 584 professors and associate professors. From 1949 to 1990, the university trained nearly 25,000 undergraduate graduates, 3,000 graduate students and in-service teachers, and 1,700 evening university graduates.

Harbin University of Architecture and Engineering, located on Xidazhi Street, was established in the 1920s and originated as the Civil Engineering Department of Harbin Institute of Technology. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, it pioneered China’s first programs in industrial and civil engineering construction, water supply and drainage engineering, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning engineering. It also established a number of professionally modernized laboratories. The university consists of 8 departments and 16 majors, enrolling doctoral students in 5 disciplines such as structural mechanics, and master's students in 16 disciplines such as road engineering. In recent years, under the policy of combining teaching with research, the university has jointly completed 212 research projects with advanced domestic and international standards.

In 1990, the college had 762 faculty members, including 28 professors and 155 associate professors. From 1949 to 1990, it trained 8,390 undergraduate and junior college graduates and 185 graduate students for the nation.
