Harbin Railway Museum

Since 1896, Harbin’s railway has undergone over 100 years of development. This period not only represents a concentrated history of China’s railway evolution but also serves as a typical reflection of Harbin’s urban growth. The construction of the Harbin Railway Museum officially commenced on June 30, 2016. During the preparatory phase, the museum’s preparatory working group engaged experts and scholars from the cultural and museum committees of Heilongjiang Province and the China Railway Corporation to research and verify major events and figures in Harbin Railway’s history. They conducted in-depth field investigations at heritage sites along the China Eastern Railway and visited the homes of some former railway employees. Additionally, they publicly collected historical materials and artifacts through newspapers, radio, television, and WeChat platforms. After five months of intensive construction, the 7,800-square-meter museum was completed. The indoor area features three main exhibition zones: the History Hall, the Feature Hall, and the Thematic Hall. The History Hall systematically presents the over 100-year development journey and trajectory of Harbin Railway, providing detailed records of major historical events and figures from various periods. The Feature Hall includes exhibition rooms such as “A Century of Office Furniture” and “A Century of Old Train Stations,” which authentically recreate the historical appearances of Harbin Railway during different eras including the China Eastern Railway, Republican-era railways, the South Manchuria Railway, and the People’s Railway. The Thematic Hall introduces the historical background behind the creation of the locomotives “Mao Zedong,” “Zhu De,” and “Iron Ox” through图文 (text and images), scene reconstructions, and special documentary screenings. It also showcases the spirit and qualities of Harbin Railway workers during special historical periods such as the “Man-Chao-Wu” Movement, the Jiangqiao Resistance War, and the “8.25” Flood Fight. The outdoor exhibition area centers around the Zhan Tianyou Square, creating a comprehensive space for nearby residents and tourists that combines leisure, tourism, and red education.
