Harbin Telecom Communication Museum

The telecom communication industry in Harbin began in the late 19th century and has a history of 107 years to date. Over the past century, as an infrastructure vital to national livelihood, Harbin’s telecom communication has grown alongside the city. Since the reform and opening-up, the industry has achieved leapfrog development. In less than 20 years, its communication capacity advanced into the top 10 among provincial capital cities nationwide, making significant contributions to Harbin’s reform and opening-up, the construction of an information-based society, the advancement of various social programs, and the improvement of people’s quality of life. The Harbin Telecom Communication Museum is divided into three sections: the late Qing Dynasty and Republican era, the socialist construction period, and the new era of reform and opening-up. It features 27 exhibition panels and displays 190 historical artifacts, 154 photographs, and 2 electronic maps that reflect the city’s telecom communication history, bearing distinct imprints of their times and representing a profound cultural legacy. Through a wealth of historical photos, texts, and artifacts, the museum documents and showcases the 107-year history of the Harbin Communications Branch (formerly the Harbin Telecom Bureau)—from laying the telegraph line from Hulan to the north bank of the Songhua River and establishing a telegraph office in the Songpu area in the late 19th century, to becoming a modern information and communication enterprise in 2006. Highlights include photos of visits by Chairman Mao Zedong, Premier Zhou Enlai, General Secretary Hu Jintao, and leaders from national ministries, as well as provincial and municipal authorities to the Harbin Communications Branch. There are also precious historical materials, honor certificates, and medals from the Harbin Telecom Bureau since 1946, along with exchange, transmission, and terminal equipment and artifacts from various periods—including telephones, wired telegraphs, wireless telegraphs, wireless paging systems, mobile phones, wireless local phones (Little Smart), the internet, and interactive television.
