Lindian Wetland Tourist Area

Lindian Wetland Tourist Area, covering an area of 210,000 hectares, was established as a provincial-level nature reserve in 1979, upgraded to a national-level reserve in 1987, and included in the "List of Wetlands of International Importance" in 1992. Its primary conservation targets are rare birds such as red-crowned cranes and the wetland ecosystem.

The area features a temperate continental monsoon climate and is the most pristine and species-rich wetland natural complex at this latitude. The Wuyu River, a tributary of the Nenjiang River, loses its defined channel here and spreads out into vast marshlands. With dense reed beds and abundant fish and shrimp, it serves as an ideal habitat for waterfowl. There are over 260 bird species, including more than 120 species of waterfowl, accounting for more than half of China’s total. Among them, 35 species are under national key protection.

The most famous are the cranes. There are 15 crane species worldwide, nine of which are found in China, and this area is home to six: the red-crowned crane, Siberian crane, white-naped crane, hooded crane, and demoiselle crane. It is truly worthy of its reputation as the world-renowned “Hometown of Cranes.”
