Suizhou Iron Flagpoles

The Suizhou Iron Flagpoles are a cultural relic protection unit of Hubei Province.

Iron Flagpoles

Located at Lishan Primary School in Lishan Town, Suizhou City. Cast in the 16th year of the Jiaqing reign during the Qing Dynasty (1811), there are two poles in total, originally serving as the flagpoles of the Guan Di Temple. Each consists of a hexagonal distorted-edge stone Sumeru pedestal, an iron base, and a cylindrical iron pole, standing 18.13 meters tall and weighing over 23,000 jin. The iron bases are cast with raised inscriptions on six sides, recording the reasons, time, and makers of the flagpoles. The poles are adorned with two coiled dragons, and at their tops stand cranes with outstretched wings, each holding a “sun” or “moon.” The temple no longer exists. (Third Batch)
