Beijihe Village, Mohe

Beijihe Village is located in Mohe County, Heilongjiang Province, China, and is known as the most northern undeveloped and pristine village in China. It lies at 53°33′N latitude and 123°17′E longitude, making it even farther north than the so-called “northernmost village” of China—Beiji Village (53°29′N, 122°21′E).

Beijihe Village is located at the northernmost tip of China, on the border between China and Russia. It belongs to Mohe County in Heilongjiang Province. The village is surrounded by mountains to the north and south, with the Heilongjiang River flowing along its eastern and western edges. Beijihe Village is a tranquil haven far from the hustle and bustle of city life—the truest northernmost village. To this day, it still does not have access to the national power grid: electricity is supplied from 16:00 to 22:00 in winter, and from 19:00 to 22:00 in summer. The village currently has a population of about 320 people, with only one primary school that has 15 students and 3 teachers (including the principal).

Beijihe Village is nestled within the mountainous area of the northern Greater Khingan Mountains, surrounded by undeveloped primeval forests. The dense woods are scattered with wild fruits, and animals such as small mammals, wild boars, roe deer, snow hares, and hazel grouses can be commonly spotted. A local guide is required when venturing into the forest (otherwise, it's easy to get lost). In autumn, when conditions are right, you can pick wild fruits, and mushrooms and wood ear fungi are also available. You might even find valuable herbs like wild ganoderma.

Strolling along the pebbled riverbank at your own pace, listening to the wind and the sound of flowing water, you’ll feel as if you’re in a paradise on earth. If you’re interested in unique rocks, you can bend down and walk slowly—you’ll discover many surprising stones, such as agate. Everyone is sure to find a stone they like. On the other side of the river lies the scenery of Russia, and sometimes you might feel you could almost touch the trees across the way. That land once belonged to us but was ceded to Russia in 1999.

Chinese soldiers from the northernmost naval unit are stationed along the river, tasked with defending the country’s northernmost frontier. Two patrol boats are moored by the riverside.

Although surrounded by mountains, Beijihe Village also features large areas of grassland and farmland. Countless unnamed wildflowers dot the green meadows.

Transportation Guide

Location: Beiji Township, Mohe County, Daxing’anling Region, Heilongjiang Province, China

By Bus: In Mohe, you can take a bus to Beiji Village. There are three buses daily at 08:20, 15:20, and 18:30, with a fare of 25 RMB per person. There is no direct bus service from Beiji Village to Beijihe Village, so you’ll need to hire a private car or join a shared ride to get there.

By Car: From Mohe County, head northwest, pass the Dalinhe Bridge, enter S207, drive 66.1 km, then make a right turn at the back, continue for 470 meters, turn left, and drive another 2.8 km to reach the village.
