Changchun Zoo and Botanical Garden is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Located in the southeastern part of Changchun City, 500 meters east of the intersection of Renmin Avenue and Ziyou Avenue, and 3 kilometers from the city center at People's Square, the park covers an area of 74 hectares, with a built-up area of 0.8 hectares and a lake area of 8.8 hectares. The park was first established in 1938 under the name "Xinjing Zoo and Botanical Garden." At that time, it was known as the "No. 1 in Asia" for its large area and the wide variety of animals and plants on display, enjoying great popularity. In 1984, the Changchun Municipal Government decided to develop and construct the site, and it has since been opened to the public under the name Changchun Zoo and Botanical Garden. The current zoo and botanical garden features lush forests, rare birds and animals, exotic plants, and beautiful landscapes where water and mountains complement each other, making it an excellent destination for leisure, entertainment, vacationing, and gatherings.

The terrain within the park is complex, and an artificial lake divides the park into three natural sections: the eastern section houses the Rare Birds and Animals Pavilion, showcasing over 200 species of flora and fauna from northern regions and is known as a "mini nature kingdom"; the western section simulates vertical plant distribution with an artificial earthen hill and features a miniature landscape called "Changbai Wilderness"; the northern section is a tropical botanical garden. The western part of the zoo and botanical garden is dominated by a 30-meter-high "artificial hill," planted with trees native to Changbai Mountain. The eastern section mainly consists of the "Animal Exhibition Area," which is home to rare wild animals such as the Siberian tiger, lynx, great bustard, and red-crowned crane; as well as precious domestic and international animals including golden monkeys, giraffes, rhinoceroses, elephants, and Guangxi monkeys, totaling over 200 species. The northern section is primarily a "large amusement park and floral greenhouse production area," featuring thrilling attractions such as the log flume and space shuttle, making it a fun spot in Changchun. There is also a 1.3-hectare Japanese-style garden called the "Friendship Garden" that showcases rich Japanese landscaping.

The Animal Exhibition Area is home to rare domestic and international birds and animals such as Siberian tigers, lynxes, great bustards, red-crowned cranes, golden monkeys, giraffes, rhinoceroses, elephants, Guangxi macaques, zebras, and chimpanzees, totaling over 200 species. Within the animal exhibition area, there is also a "Bird Paradise," where over a hundred species and more than 3,000 birds roam freely in an 1800-square-meter, 8-meter-high walk-in aviary. The aviary includes interactive zones such as a "human-bird dialogue area" and a "bird training performance area," along with landscaped features like flowers, plants, rocks, and small scenes—creating a unique and delightful experience where humans and birds coexist. The large amusement park in the northern part of the park offers thrilling activities like the log flume and space shuttle. There is also a 1.3-hectare Japanese-style miniature scenic garden known as the Jilin-Miyagi Friendship Garden. If you’re up for it, climb the 28-meter-high, 0.5-hectare "Changbai Wilderness" artificial hill in the western part of the park for a bird’s-eye view of the entire zoo and the downtown area of Changchun. The park is home to over 140 species of woody plants, including the rare and precious beauty pine, a tree species unique to Jilin Province from Changbai Mountain. The park also features various plant viewing areas such as a flower garden, rose garden, and osmanthus garden.

Established during the Japanese puppet regime in 1938, the first phase of Changchun Zoo and Botanical Garden was completed in 1940. At that time, it was known as the "No. 1 in Asia" for its vast size and the wide variety of animals and plants on display, enjoying great popularity. It suffered severe damage just before the liberation of Changchun and was reduced to ruins by the time of liberation.
