Confucius Cultural Park in Changchun

Confucius Cultural Park in Changchun is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a cultural tourism site.

Confucius Cultural Park (Changchun Confucian Temple) is situated at the intersection of Yatai Street and Erdao Street in Nanguan District, Changchun. Originally constructed in the 11th year of the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1872 AD), it underwent two major renovations and expansions in the 21st year of the Guangxu reign (1895 AD) and in 1924. Due to years of weather erosion and the influence of modern politics, the Changchun Confucian Temple suffered significant damage and was repurposed for other uses for a time. After the reform and opening-up period, the temple regained attention. In 1987, it was designated as a provincial-level cultural relics protection unit. In 2002 and 2008, the municipal government carried out two major renovations and expansions. In September 2012, on the 140th anniversary of the temple’s establishment, Confucius Cultural Park was officially completed and opened to the public. The park includes two institutions: the Changchun Confucian Temple Museum and Changchun Confucian Temple Primary School, covering an area of approximately 50,000 square meters with a construction area of over 4,000 square meters. In 2011, the Changchun Confucian Temple Museum was officially established. In 2014, Confucius Cultural Park was rated as a national 4A-level tourist attraction.

[Park Highlights]

Confucius Cultural Park is divided into three zones: central, eastern, and western. The central area is the cultural heritage preservation zone, the eastern area is the educational zone, and the western area is the cultural zone. The park integrates traditional Chinese culture with modern functionality. The palace-style pavilions are arranged with balanced spatial planning and exquisite architectural artistry, blending the ancient buildings into a harmonious whole. Each structure features intricate dougong brackets, upturned eaves, and carved beams painted with colorful designs. In the central Chongsheng Hall and the east and west corridors, exhibition rooms have been set up, enriching the educational and display content of the Changchun Confucian Temple Museum. The western cultural square houses the Confucius Academy, a knowledge center dedicated to spreading traditional Chinese culture. The park also added a Bell Tower and a Drum Tower. The Bell Tower houses a massive bronze bell known as the “Changchun Harmony Bell,” while the Drum Tower features a large “Wooden Bell Auspicious Drum” with a diameter of nearly 10 meters. Every morning at 6 AM, nearby residents can hear the crisp sound of the “Changchun Harmony Bell,” and at 6 PM, the “Wooden Bell Auspicious Drum” rings out on time.

The Changchun Confucian Temple enshrines statues of Confucius along with the “Four Disciples” and “Twelve Sages” in the Dacheng Hall. In addition, there are three thematic exhibitions that are rich in content and finely presented. The east corridor hosts the “Sage of Confucianism – Art Masterpieces Exhibition,” the west corridor features the “Imperial Examination System – A Special Exhibition on China’s Civil Service Exams,” and the Chongsheng Hall displays the “Traces of the Sage and Confucian Spirit – A Historical Exhibition of China’s Confucian Temples.” These exhibitions use miniature models, e-books, and other modern display tools, along with technological elements such as sound, light, and electricity, to provide a comprehensive showcase of Confucius’ life, the imperial examination system, and the history of Confucian temples. They are truly distinctive.

Since its reconstruction in 2002, the Changchun Confucian Temple has regained vitality and actively engaged in promoting traditional Chinese culture. In addition to hosting traditional ceremonies such as Coming-of-Age and Enlightenment Rites, the temple also organizes a variety of public welfare events during traditional festivals such as New Year’s Day, Spring Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, Double Ninth Festival, and Laba Festival, all of which are highly popular among locals and tourists. The temple has also been committed to promoting traditional Chinese studies. On December 28, 2005, the Changchun Confucian Temple, together with the Provincial Social Science Federation and Changchun Television Station, co-founded the country’s first public lecture series on traditional Chinese studies — the Chinese Studies Grand Lecture. This program has continued uninterrupted ever since. Every Saturday, a large number of citizens gather at the temple to attend these lectures and appreciate the charm of China’s excellent traditional culture. Starting from September 28, 2003, the Changchun Confucian Temple has held grand ceremonies to commemorate Confucius on his birthday. In 2005, it participated in joint global and cross-strait Confucius memorial events, attracting widespread attention and coverage, and making a notable impact both domestically and internationally.

[Functions and Significance]

Cultural relics and historic sites are the most powerful bearers of history and precious legacies left by our ancestors. The construction of Confucius Cultural Park adheres to the principle of “preserving the old while embracing the new,” ensuring “restoration in the style of the original” to maintain historical authenticity to the greatest extent. This plays a vital role in inheriting China’s outstanding traditional culture. At the same time, it takes into account urban development and the practical needs of residents, breathing new life into these historic sites. The Changchun Confucian Temple has made active efforts in spreading traditional culture. The weekly Chinese Studies Grand Lectures, annual Confucius memorial ceremonies, Coming-of-Age and Enlightenment Rites, traditional weddings, and events held during traditional festivals have all received widespread praise from citizens and tourists. Today, Confucius Cultural Park has become another iconic architectural complex in Changchun, a hub for cultural works, a center for spreading traditional Chinese studies, a venue for showcasing historical civilization, and a place for leisure and entertainment for local residents. It also serves as an important node on Changchun’s cultural tourism routes and a key window for presenting the city’s cultural image to the world.
