The Museum of Northeastern Ethnic Culture is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

The Museum of Northeastern Ethnic Culture is situated on the south side of Century Square in the Economic and Technological Development Zone of Changchun City, next to the Changchun International Convention and Exhibition Center. It spans 31,000 square meters in land area, with a building area of 22,000 square meters and an exhibition space of 13,000 square meters. The museum collection includes more than 40,000 items of ethnic and folk culture. Planning for the museum began in late 2007, and staff traveled extensively across the northeastern region to collect exhibits that represent the diverse folk customs of different areas, covering a total distance of over 600,000 kilometers. By October 2013, preparations were completed and exhibition arrangements commenced. The museum officially opened to the public on June 29, 2014. It is currently the largest comprehensive museum in China’s northeastern region, showcasing the greatest number of ancient and modern ethnic groups in the northeast, as well as the richest array of traditional and contemporary folk phenomena. It serves as an educational resource for the public to learn about northeastern ethnic and folk cultures, and has also become a new attraction for visitors to Changchun.

[Attraction Features]

The museum building has four floors in total, with the first and second floors currently open to the public, covering an area of over 9,000 square meters. The museum features three permanent exhibition areas — Ancient Ethnic Cultures and Folkways of the Northeast, Modern Ethnic Cultures and Folkways of the Northeast, and Representative Traditional Workshops of the Northeast — along with several thematic exhibition zones. These showcase the cultures and customs of 12 ethnic groups in the Northeast from ancient times to the present.

Ancient Ethnic Cultures and Folkways of the Northeast. This exhibition traces the origins of the northeastern peoples from the Miaohoushan people 400,000 years ago, the evolution of historical administrative divisions, and the production, life, and culture of approximately 20 ethnic groups from ancient northeastern China, including the Huaxia-Han, Sushen, Yemaek, and Donghu peoples.

Modern Ethnic Cultures and Folkways of the Northeast. This exhibition displays the formation, development, evolution, distribution, production, life, and culture of the region’s long-established modern ethnic groups, including the Han, Manchu, Mongolian, Hui, Korean, Daur, Oroqen, Ewenki, Hezhe, Xibo, Kirgiz, and Russian peoples.

Representative Traditional Workshops of the Northeast. This section uses reconstructed scenes to present traditional workshops characteristic of the Northeast.

The various exhibition zones employ traditional display methods such as physical objects, charts, text, sand tables, and scene reconstructions, as well as modern technologies like electronic simulations and video compositing, to showcase the folk phenomena of the Northeast and the latest research findings.

[Significance and Role]

The Museum of Northeastern Ethnic Culture provides citizens and tourists with a venue to learn about the region’s ethnic groups and folk customs. It plays an important role in researching and showcasing northeastern folklore, and has also become a new cultural landmark and city attraction in Changchun.
