Garden of a Hundred Flowers, Herbs, and Trees

The Hundred Flowers Garden is located near the intersection of Fangcao Street and Weishan Road. It was first constructed in late 2012 and officially opened to the public on August 23, 2013, covering an area of 180,000 square meters. Following the construction philosophy of "people-oriented, green ecology, and natural harmony," and adhering to ecological and environmental protection principles, the garden realizes a rational combination and integration of flowers, trees, grass, water, and cultural landscapes. It combines functions such as production and research, science education, species collection, and sightseeing and leisure. It is a uniquely characteristic flower-themed botanical garden and a new highlight in urban landscaping with distinct northern features.

The Herb Garden is situated in the southwest corner of Changchun Park, covering an area of 6 hectares. It is currently the only park in our province themed around traditional Chinese medicinal herbs. Using medicinal herb plants as its main material, the Herb Garden fully utilizes the diverse forms of medicinal plants and rich landscape design techniques to shape its scenery. By combining various types of medicinal herbs, special flowers, and landscape features, it achieves an integration of science education, teaching, health care, culture, and art. It presents an ecological medicinal plant landscape garden constructed with new concepts and methods.

The Tree Garden is located in the western section of South Ring Road, adjacent to the High-Tech Development Zone to the north. It was reconstructed from part of the land of the former First Nursery of Changchun City, which was built in the 1930s. The garden was completed in August 2012, covering an area of 18 hectares, and integrates production, research, leisure, and teaching. It is the city’s only botanical garden themed around trees.

[Highlights of the Scenic Area]

Hundred Flowers Garden. Visitors can admire hundreds of varieties and millions of flowers here. The garden features seven scenic areas: Green Fields and Fragrant Trails, Forget-Worry Messages, Autumn Reflections and Colored Silk, Flowery Thoughts, Lake Mirror and Lotus Charm, Changbai’s Refined Beauty, and Lingering Flowers and Dream Pursuit. A total of 216 species from 172 genera and 68 families are planted. It is mainly divided into a flower viewing area and a production demonstration area, highlighting wildflowers from the Changbai Mountain region as the main landscape feature, along with specialized theme gardens such as roses, peonies, chrysanthemums, perennial flowers, and aquatic plants. The viewing area includes an artificial lake covering 5,000 square meters. While incorporating modern landscaping art, the "Hundred Flowers Garden" also takes seasonal changes into full consideration, ensuring that each theme garden displays its unique charm in different seasons.

Herb Garden. It is divided into six scenic areas: Starry Skies and Moonlit Waves, Reeds Dancing in Joy, Emerald Isles and Fragrant Treasures, Apricot Grove in Spring Warmth, Ancient Rhymes and Flowing Fragrance, and Willow Rhythms and Cascading Streams. Currently, 789 trees and shrubs have been planted, including 36 rare and valuable plants of Magnolia sieboldii with a diameter at breast height of 10 cm, which hold significant economic value; 18 precious ginkgo trees; 85 Japanese linden trees; 44 Korean pines; and 3 fir trees nearly 30 meters tall. Plans include planting nearly 104 varieties of medicinal herbs over an area of about 12,000 square meters. This place not only provides visual enjoyment but also serves as a science education base for medicinal plants.

Tree Garden. It primarily features native tree species and existing nursery stock, while also introducing several rare and precious tree species from Northeast China. Utilizing the plant resources of the Changbai Mountain region and considering both plant color coordination and the "plant community" effect, it organically combines group planting with solitary planting, conifers with broadleaf trees, tall trees with shrubs, as well as traditional and modern elements. The planted seedlings belong to 22 families, 51 genera, and 108 varieties, with a total stock of 220,000 plants. The garden has five functional areas: Ancient Tree Viewing Area, Forest Bathing Area, Colored Leaf Forest Area, Leisure Area, and Production & Research Area. A large area is dedicated to sowing and planting perennial flowers and seasonal blooms, with widely used flower varieties totaling over 40 types and more than 2 million plants. The planting method adopts a new model of mixed sowing of seasonal flowering plants and perennial varieties, while also emphasizing factors such as color, plant height, and blooming periods. This creates a mutually enhancing and complementary landscape where vast floral displays harmonize with treescapes, forming the Tree Garden’s three-dimensional landscaping style that harmoniously coordinates trees, shrubs, flowers, grass, and vines.

The Garden of a Hundred Flowers, Herbs, and Trees is one of the important achievements in our city’s efforts to build a green, livable, forested city. It fully reflects the municipal Party committee and government’s vision of creating a green, smart, and humanistic city, as well as the people-centered philosophy of "making life better through urban development." The completion of the Garden of a Hundred Flowers, Herbs, and Trees has greatly enriched the cultural life of Changchun residents, added beauty to the city, and created stunning seasonal landscapes—flowers blooming in spring, lush green trees in summer, falling petals in autumn, and proud pines against snow in winter—adding a rich and colorful touch to the building of a beautiful Changchun.
