Jilin Provincial Museum

Established in September 2003 and officially inaugurated on February 14, 2004, Jilin Provincial Museum is directly under the Jilin Provincial Department of Culture. It was formed through the merger of the former Jilin Provincial Museum and the Jilin Provincial Museum of Modern History, and is a comprehensive museum of history and art.

In May 1951, the Jilin Provincial Government approved the establishment of the Jilin Provincial Museum, which was completed in December of the same year. On January 27, 1952, the Jilin Provincial Museum officially opened at No. 12 Jiangwan Road, Jilin City. In September 1954, the museum moved to the Puppet Manchukuo Palace in Changchun along with the provincial government. In September 2003, the former Jilin Provincial Museum and the Jilin Provincial Museum of Modern History merged to form the Jilin Provincial Museum.

The museum currently houses a collection of nearly 100,000 items, ranging from ancient times to the modern era, featuring a rich array of treasures and profound cultural significance. Its collections are particularly distinguished in Chinese historical paintings and calligraphy, artifacts from ancient northeastern frontier regimes such as Goguryeo, Bohai, and the Manchu, modern revolutionary relics, and items related to the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army, holding an important position in the museum community in China. Since the reform and opening-up, the museum has held over 1,000 exhibitions and welcomed more than ten million visitors. It has also published hundreds of academic works and produced a large number of renowned experts and scholars, such as Mr. Zhang Boju, a master in cultural relic collection and appraisal, and Mr. Wang Chengli, a noted historian and sociologist.

Under the favorable conditions of cultural reform and with the support of the provincial government, construction of the new building of Jilin Provincial Museum commenced on May 8, 2007. The new building covers a floor area of 32,000 square meters and is located in the Jingyue Economic Development Zone in Changchun, forming part of the Changchun Science & Technology & Culture Center complex. The main structure of the new museum has been completed, and the foundational exhibition装修 work has also been finished. Once the new museum opens, Jilin Provincial Museum will step into the forefront of domestic museums with a brand-new image.

As the center for the collection, preservation, exhibition, scientific research, and authentication of cultural relics in Jilin Province, the museum will better fulfill its role in promoting the nation’s outstanding traditional culture. It will continue to enrich and deepen people's understanding and appreciation of history and culture, making new contributions to the development of the museum industry in Jilin Province and the construction of socialist spiritual civilization.
