The Catholic Church was originally built in the thirteenth year of the Guangxu reign (1888), initiated by missionary Ren Baoheng and constructed within Panshi County town. To this day, missionary activities have continued for 118 years, with a peak membership of over one thousand parishioners. The main hall occupies the central eastern part of the compound, a rectangular building oriented north-south, with gray brick walls and black tile roofing, tall windows, and wide doors. Originally, right next to the main entrance of the hall, there stood a pointed tower bell tower over 15 meters high, which was destroyed by Japanese troops stationed in Panshi during the “Panshi Incident” in September 1932, and has not been restored since. Bullet holes are still visible on the wall above the current main entrance, serving as a testament to the anti-Japanese resistance efforts of the people of Panshi. The hall has two main entrances on the left and right sides, featuring a double-row columned interior with twenty-four red-painted pillars, a domed ceiling, a red-painted wooden floor, clean and neat inner walls, and vividly lifelike paintings that captivate viewers. At the northernmost end of the hall is a low wooden railing, inside of which is a pulpit set on a two-tiered wooden platform. The back features a niche housing the statue of Jesus Christ. The Catholic Church is located in the northeast corner of the old county town. It is a near-Western-style tall building, with a lofty roof ridge and large pointed-arch stained glass windows, standing prominently among the surrounding structures. The entire church complex is enclosed within a large courtyard with a blue-brick iron gate. Architecturally, it retains the simplicity and solemnity of traditional Chinese buildings while also reflecting the richness and elegance of Western architectural styles. According to historical county records: “Built during the Guangxu reign, it comprises a Western-style building with a church and a bell tower over five zhang high.” In its early days, the Catholic Church was divided into four sections: the main chapel and five brick-and-tile rooms serving as the nuns’ living quarters formed the inner courtyard, while the outer courtyard housed a reception office, storage rooms, a small parish school, with other rooms rented out for other uses. The church complex includes a total of 54 properties, with a built-up area of 2,191 square meters and an overall site area of 7,980 square meters, making it the largest church at the county level in the province.
