Former Site of the Fenghai Railway Bureau

The former site of the Fenghai Railway Bureau is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The former site of the “Original Office Building of the Fenghai Railway Bureau,” located at No. 1 Dongzhan Street, Dadong District, is now Shenyang East Railway Station and has been designated as an immovable cultural relic of Shenyang City.

The Fenghai Railway, also known as the Shenhai Railway, was a route from Fengtian Provincial City to Hailong Town (now in Jilin Province). It was initiated in 1924 by Wang Yongjiang, the governor of Fengtian Province, and spanned 236 kilometers. Construction began in July 1925 and was completed in September 1927. In December of that year, it was extended to Chaoyang Town, adding 16 kilometers. Additionally, a branch line from Meihekou to Xi’an (now Liaoyuan) was built, stretching 66 kilometers. After the line became operational, the Fenghai Railway established its railway administration. The completion of this railway attracted attention from Europe and America, demonstrating that the Chinese could build railways in the Northeast without foreign funding or technology.

After the “September 18 Incident,” all state-owned railways in the Northeast, including the Fenghai Railway, fell into the hands of Japanese invaders. It was not until Japan’s surrender on August 15, 1945, that the Fenghai Railway was returned to Chinese control.

In May 2013, the State Council (State Council Document [2013] No. 13) announced the former site of the Fenghai Railway Bureau as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
