Liaoning Science and Technology Museum

The Liaoning Science and Technology Museum serves as a science education base.

The Liaoning Science and Technology Museum is a public institution directly under the Liaoning Provincial Association for Science and Technology. It is a key cultural construction project of the province. Construction officially began in July 2011, the main structure was completed in July 2013, seasonal trial operations started in June 2014, and the museum officially opened to the public on April 29, 2015.

(1) Building Scale

The new building of the Liaoning Science and Technology Museum is located at No. 159, Wisdom 3rd Street, Hunnan District, Shenyang City. It covers a land area of 69,100 m², with a total construction area of 102,508 m², including an underground area of 23,691 m² and a above-ground area of 78,817 m². The main structure consists of one basement level, three above-ground levels, and partial six floors, with a total building height of 31.9 meters.

(2) Functional Setup

The Liaoning Science and Technology Museum is a comprehensive science museum integrating science education, technological exchange, and leisure tourism.

1. Science Education Function. This is the core function of the museum, consisting of permanent exhibitions, science-themed special effect cinemas, training and experimentation programs, among others.

(1) The permanent exhibitions comprise five major exhibition halls—the Children’s Science Paradise, Exploration and Discovery, Creation and Practice, Cradle of Industry, and Technology in Daily Life—as well as a public space display area. The exhibits cover a wide range of disciplines, including physics, chemistry, astronomy, geography, life sciences, safety and risk prevention, aerospace technology, transportation, military industry, computer and electronics technology, information networks, environmental science, new materials, and Liaoning’s industrial sectors. There are over 760 exhibits, with more than 95% being interactive, creating and recreating learning environments for hands-on scientific exploration that allow visitors to engage with science through operation and experience.

(2) The science-themed special effect cinemas include four types—IMAX, dome, 4D, and motion flight simulators—as well as a Dream Theater. All are equipped with internationally advanced facilities that use special effects technology to present science and cultural knowledge, offering visitors an immersive experience, the thrill of various cinematic effects, and an appreciation of the beauty of nature and humanity.

(3) Following the concept of “Home, Mentor, and Craftsman,” the museum has set up 13 laboratories—covering chemistry, physics, mathematics, machine tools, electrical engineering, robotics, food science, and more—and one multifunctional classroom. These cover three types of content: basic science, life science, and cutting-edge science. They aim to develop students’ hands-on skills, ability to explore scientific knowledge, and cognitive abilities, serving as an extension and supplement to school laboratory education.

2. Technological Exchange Function. The museum has 10 meeting rooms of varying sizes, including a science lecture hall, multifunctional hall, video rooms, and expert rooms. It hosts academic exchanges, forums, and presentations to promote and share cutting-edge scientific achievements and academic concepts. It also organizes science lectures and training sessions to meet the diverse technological needs of the public across different ages and levels.

3. Leisure Tourism Function. The public spaces are bright and spacious, with complete service facilities that facilitate visitor flow and reflect human-centered and modern design principles. Built to 5A-level tourist attraction standards, the museum provides an indoor and outdoor environment rich in both ecological and cultural value, offering an excellent venue for science education and leisure.
