Mengya Mountain Mountain City

Mengya Mountain is located in Group 7 of Mengya Village, Tangchi Town, Zhenxing District, Dandong City. The summit is rectangular in shape, with slightly higher terrain on the north and south sides and lower, concave areas on the east and west, giving the peak the appearance of a saddle bridge. The main peak stands at an elevation of 304.2 meters, with a flat surface at the top surrounded by steep cliffs, making it imposing and precipitous. In 1982, during the second national cultural relics survey, a work team discovered a mountain city on the main peak, identifying it as having been built during the Goguryeo period. In 2008, during the third national cultural relics survey, the Dandong Municipal Cultural Relics Survey Team conducted a re-investigation. In 2015, the Archaeology Department of the Korean War Memorial (Dandong Museum) once again organized professionals to carry out archaeological investigations and surveys of the site.

The Mengya Mountain City has a rectangular layout and is divided into a main city and a barbican. The northern part is the main city, with its north, east, and south sides formed naturally by the mountain cliffs. It is 40 meters long and 20 meters wide, covering an area of 800 square meters. The western wall was built with dry-laid stone but has now collapsed, with remaining height of 1 meter and width of 0.5 meter. The mountaintop is mostly flat, except for a large rock in the center. In recent years, someone used red paint to inscribe a seal script character for “longevity” (寿) on it, but wind and rain have left the writing faded and mottled. The barbican is also rectangular, measuring 30 meters in length from north to south and 10 meters in width from east to west, with an area of 300 square meters. Its walls were constructed with dry-laid stones, with remaining height of 1 meter and width of 0.5 meter. Within the southern wall is a beacon tower, which has now collapsed, with remaining height of 1.5 meters and width of 1 meter. On the western side, there is a gate about 2 meters wide, believed to be the main entrance to the mountain city. From the mountaintop, the views are spectacular: to the southwest, you can see the Yalu River winding westward toward its estuary; to the east, the Hushan Great Wall stands tall in the distance, forming a striking visual echo.
