Miaohoushan Site

The Miaohoushan site is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Located east of Shanchengzi Village in Xiaozhen Town, the Miaohoushan site is an ancient human cultural relic. It is 4 kilometers from the county town of Xiaozhen and 15 kilometers from Guanmenshan.

The ancient Miaohoushan site is a natural cave formed within Ordovician limestone strata, with accumulated deposits. The deposit is 13.5 meters thick and divided into eight layers from bottom to top.

Excavations since 1978 have uncovered, with the exception of the first and third layers where no fossils or artifacts were found, a total of 14 pieces of human cultural relics and 74 types of ancient animal fossils from the fourth layer upwards. Additionally, two human teeth and a segment of a child’s femur fossil were discovered in the fifth and sixth layers. Research indicates that this human site dates back at least 400,000 years.

Professor Jia Lanpo, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, renowned geologist, and archaeologist, visited Miaohoushan for research multiple times. He authored the book "Miaoshanhou," published in 1986 by the Cultural Relics Publishing House, which garnered international attention in the archaeological academic community. The ancient Miaohoushan cultural site has been included in "History of Northeast China," "Chronicles of China," and "Encyclopedia of China" (Archaeology Volume), adding a glorious chapter to Chinese history.
