The ancient Five Buddha Temple is located at the southern foot of Mount Yiwulu, within the Shuiquan area of Shibaozi Village, Luyang Town. Built against the mountain, it boasts beautiful scenery, breathtaking views, perilous peaks, peculiar rocks, and lush pines providing shade. Combining danger with beauty, tranquility, and elegance, it is a sacred destination for sightseeing and Buddhist worship.

The Five Buddha Temple, originally known as Pianshi Temple or Huangyan Temple, is commonly called the Five Buddha Cave. According to surviving inscriptions, the temple was first built during the reign of Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty and was subsequently restored during the Ming Dynasty under Emperor Yingzong and the Qing Dynasty under Emperor Yongzheng. A restored stele in the temple clearly records the inscription “Erected in the autumn of the Jiayin year of the Kangxi reign of the Great Qing,” indicating that this temple has a history of over 300 years since its restoration.

The Five Buddha Temple is divided into an upper and a lower courtyard. The lower courtyard features simple yet majestic structures such as the mountain gate, the Heavenly King Hall, the Amitabha Hall, the Three Saints Hall, the Compassion Spring, and the hexagonal pavilion, all arranged in a well-spaced and classic Chinese architectural style. The upper courtyard includes attractions such as the Ten Thousand Buddha Cave, the Medicine Buddha Hall, the Manjushri Hall, the Bell Tower, the Mahavira Hall, the Great General Ma Cave, and the Sea-Viewing Temple, which amaze visitors with their thrilling, spectacular, steep, and rugged features.

The entire temple complex is nestled among rolling mountains, with verdant pines and cypresses, overlapping peaks, and undulating ridges that resemble a dragon soaring through the clouds. Peculiar rocks and ancient caves abound, offering visitors breathtaking views and often making them feel reluctant to leave.

The most distinctive feature is the natural giant Buddha at the mountaintop, which is truly astonishing and can be considered a rare treasure in the world. Unlike other natural Buddha figures, both domestically and internationally, this is a complete, standalone natural formation standing proudly on the mountaintop. Its head is remarkably lifelike, and it stands independently without being obscured by surrounding peaks. The facial features — the forehead, brow bones, eyes, nose, cheeks, and chin — are clearly defined and well-proportioned. The lines of the body, shoulders, arms, and knees are distinct and easily visible. When mist envelops the mountains, it seems as if the Buddha is manifesting, creating a heavenly, otherworldly experience.

As the ancients said, “A mountain need not be high; it is sacred if it is home to an immortal.” Every year on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, the Five Buddha Temple Fair attracts throngs of devout worshippers and tourists from all directions.

Currently, the 8-kilometer-long asphalt road leading up the mountain has been completed and opened to traffic, allowing visitors from outside the area to take a bus directly from Luyang to the Five Buddha Temple scenic parking lot. Eleven scenic spots, including the Amitabha Hall, the Heavenly King Hall, the General’s Cave, the Sea-Viewing Temple, and the One-Line Sky, have all been restored. The entire scenic area has taken initial shape, and various tourism facilities, supporting infrastructure, and plans for a two-day tour project are also under development.
