Mount Yiwulvshan — Qingyan Temple Scenic Area

Mount Yiwulvshan — Qingyan Temple Scenic Area is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a cultural tourism destination.

Qingyan Temple is located within Changxingdian Town, Beizhen City, Liaoning Province, at the southern end of Mount Yiwulvshan, covering an area of 13 square kilometers. The temple was first built during the Northern Wei Dynasty, flourished in the mid-Tang Dynasty, and has a history of over 1,500 years, with incense burning continuously all day long. In 1986, it was approved by the provincial government as a religious activity site. This is a renowned scenic area that blends religion and tourism, where natural scenery and cultural landscapes complement each other, and the “Eight Scenic Spots and Twelve Wonders” are spectacular. Qingyan Temple consists of multiple temples including the Upper Temple, Middle Temple, Lower Temple, Wenshu Temple, Niangniang Hall, Yaoshi Hall, Caishen Hall, Shengshui Temple, and Guanyin Hall. The most famous is the “Crooked Neck Guanyin” enshrined in the Upper Temple, known throughout the world. According to *Anecdotes of Ancient Relics in Northeast China*: “When the tide receded in the South Sea, a green stone Buddha statue emerged. It was brought to the ancient cave in the clouds of Qingyan Mountain. When workers tried to move the statue through the gate, it wouldn’t fit. Someone jokingly said, ‘If the old Buddha would just tilt its neck, it could go in.’ As soon as the words were spoken, the Buddha’s neck tilted. Everyone was astonished and respectfully moved the statue inside. They left in awe, forgetting to ask the Buddha to straighten its neck, so it has remained crooked ever since.” The “Crooked Neck Guanyin” is one of the thirty-two manifestations of Guanyin Bodhisattva. Later, it was renovated in the fourth year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty and the sixteenth year of the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty. After 2002, additional attractions were added, including the Five Hundred Arhats Slope, Three Hundred Arhats Slope, Guanyin’s Hand, a bas-relief mural of the Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars, a bas-relief mural of the legend of the Crooked Neck Guanyin, the Heart Sutra stone carving, the auspicious white elephant, the Maitreya Buddha, Bodhidharma, leisure arhats, and the God of Longevity.
