Dingtun Han Tombs

The Dingtun Han Tombs are a cultural heritage site protected by Yingkou City.

The Dingtun Han Tombs are located in Nongmin Village, Dongcheng Subdistrict Office, Gaizhou City. The village was originally named Dingtun, hence the name of the tombs. The tomb cluster is distributed along the northern bank of the Daqing River, covering an area of 930,000 square meters.

Local residents often found bricks, pottery, coins, knife money, and other items during infrastructure construction and farming activities. In the 1950s, the Liaoning Provincial Museum excavated several tombs in this area. During the 1983 cultural relics survey, Han tombs were identified and a large number of burial objects were unearthed. These included painted pottery cosmetic boxes, pottery figurines, pottery jars, stoves, granaries, basins, cauldrons, as well as bronze seals and wuzhu coins, both ritual and practical items.

Pottery was the most common item buried in the Han tombs. In addition to practical utensils, a large number of ritual vessels also began to appear. Using pottery models to represent aspects of daily life and to accompany the deceased in their eternal rest was a distinctive feature of Han tombs. The abundance and variety of burial pottery were astounding, including house models, furniture, stoves and pigsties, pots and pans, as well as pottery figurines and grain storage units... Everyday household items were all present in the tombs, intended for the deceased’s use in the afterlife. This highlights the lavish burial customs of the Han Dynasty and reflects the belief in the immortality of the soul and the deep sorrow and remembrance held for the departed during that period.

In 1984, the Yingkou Municipal People's Government (Ying Zheng Fa [1984] No. 108) designated the Dingtun Han Tombs as a municipal-level cultural heritage site. The cultural heritage protection area and construction control zone announced by the Yingkou Municipal People's Government (Ying Zheng Fa [1990] No. 38) are as follows: the protection area includes the area south of the Gaizhou–Baiguo Farm highway, extending to the southern bank of Dawo River, starting from the foot of Tietashan Mountain in the east to Fanrong Village in the west. The stone pillars and stone carvings within the protected area, within a 20-meter radius, are classified as Category I construction control zones, where the terrain and landforms must be preserved.
