Taiwan’s Second Site Recognized: Rukai Tribe’s Slate House Listed as Global Architectural Cultural Asset

The World Monuments Fund (WMF), a major partner of UNESCO and the world’s earliest international non-profit focused on the conservation of world heritage and architecture, has announced the 2016 World Monuments Watch list — 50 sites across 36 countries — which includes the ancient slate house settlement of the Rukai tribe’s Qugabuan community (Hocao) in Pingtung. This is Taiwan’s second globally recognized cultural asset following the Huayuan settlement in Penghu’s Wang’an in 2004.

The WMF has long been committed to the preservation and restoration of cultural heritage, with projects spanning 135 countries and covering approximately 790 cultural assets to date. Notable examples include the temples of Angkor Wat, the watery city of Venice, ancient Roman ruins, Beijing’s Forbidden City, Easter Island’s moai statues, a series of French castles, and post-earthquake heritage protection in East Japan.
