Autumn isn’t just about red leaves – the yellow ginkgo trees turn the branches gold, painting the whole boulevard in a translucent golden hue. Travelers visiting Hokkaido who want to enjoy the foliage easily within the city, but without traveling to popular maple-viewing spots, can head to the front of the Former Hokkaido Government Office Building in central Sapporo. There, two rows of ginkgo trees line the street, reaching their most beautiful period from mid-October to early November. When illuminated at night, the scene fills with a warm, romantic ambiance.

The Western-style building from Japan’s Meiji era, the “Former Hokkaido Government Office Building,” is located in central Sapporo. It is a red-brick Baroque structure and one of the iconic landscapes of Hokkaido. In front of the building, there are two rows of ginkgo trees that start turning yellow from around mid-October. At night, the area around the building and the boulevard in front are lit up, emitting a warm glow that highlights the nighttime beauty of the ginkgo trees.
