Another new tourist attraction? The "Imperial Post Office" boasts five-star decor and a backyard garden

Have you ever seen a post office like this? Its bright design and comfortable seating make it feel like a five-star interior. The Taipei 24th Branch on Ren'ai Road cost nearly NT$10 million to renovate. Due to its proximity to the Imperial Palace, there were questions about whether it was favoring the local elite. On the 21st, Minister of Transportation and Communications Chen Jianyu responded in the Legislative Yuan,saying the Imperial Post Office is a model for renovating old post offices, and reminded Chunghwa Post to prioritize comfort and convenience, without going overboard on luxury.

The Taipei 24th Branch on Ren'ai Road, dubbed the "Imperial Post Office," is known to havea decoration budget exceeding NT$9 million, with an interior layout vastly different from traditional post offices. In addition to lowering counter heights, chairs have been added in front of the counters to allow people to sit while conducting business. The waiting area is very comfortable, and there’s even an outdoor space resembling a small garden outside the post office for people to rest. Moreover,all related service equipment has been digitized, including touch-screen ticket machines, as well as tablets and interactive e-commerce computers.

Although there were earlier reports that the post office would be closed by the end of the year due to low usage, the significant renovation near the Imperial Palace sparked questions about whether it was favoring residents in that area. In response, Chunghwa Post explained that the "Model Post Office" initiative was launched, and this branch on Ren'ai Road was chosen as a model. By renovating an old post office, they aim to offer the public a new experience. Furthermore,the funds spent were not entirely used for decoration, but also included structural reinforcement of the aging building.

Minister of Transportation and Communications Chen Jianyu also responded in the Legislative Yuan, stating that renovating old post offices as model branches is necessary and can improve the quality of postal services for the public. He alsonoted that because there are many commercial office buildings on Ren'ai Road, the post office enjoys high usage, contradicting claims that it solely benefits residents of the Imperial Palace.However, he reminded Chunghwa Post to maintain a “corporate cost mindset,” prioritizing comfort and convenience without going overboard on luxury.
Chunghwa Post also stated that in recent years, it has carried out improvements and beautification of business environments and spaces, updated signage, set up senior-friendly zones and restrooms, among other efforts. These facility upgrades, applicable to both urban and rural areas, span nationwide and include outlying islands. This includes constructing 21 new post offices (2013–2016), renovating 102 post offices (2014–2015), updating signs at 1,514 post offices, and installing restrooms in 66 post offices.
