The Migratory Bird Festival is here — the "Taipei International Birdwatching Fair" kicks off this weekend

Attention all birdwatching enthusiasts！The 2015 Taipei International Birdwatching Fair will take place on October 24 and 25 at Guandu Nature Park, with the theme “Seeing Wild Birds, Conserving Nature”. The park’s Nature Center will provide binoculars and volunteer guides, along with a series of exciting activities such as ecological challenge stations, knowledge-sharing booths, and eco-theatre performances. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun.

The Taipei International Birdwatching Fair is the largest of its kind in Asia. Since its inception in 1999, it has become a model for countries across Asia, including the Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia. According to the Taipei City Department of Economic Development, Taiwan lies along the East Asian Flyway—one of the world’s eight major migratory bird routes—and boasts rich and unique ecological resources. About one-fifteenth of the world’s bird species can be observed here, including 27 endemic species.

The Taipei Wild Bird Society stated thatthe mascot for this year’s birdwatching season is the “Little Grebe,” one of the most common waterfowl in northern Taiwan, yet one that few people know much about. The society hopes the fair will raise public awareness and encourage conservation of the natural environment around us. Admission is free throughout the event.
