Hakodate in Hokkaido has long been known to Taiwanese travelers for its stunning million-dollar night view. The night scenery from the Hakodateyama Observatory is even listed as one of the world’s three best night views by the Michelin Guide. However, there is actually another lesser-known local spot in Hakodate perfect for night viewing. From here, you can gaze out at Hakodateyama, enjoy a tranquil atmosphere, and avoid the crowds — a highly recommended visit.

Located just a 30-minute drive from downtown Hakodate, the “Jōdai Ranch Observation Deck” is a night view spot known only to locals. The natural surroundings feature a spacious parking lot where you can enjoy the scenery right from your car. A reporter drove up the mountain in the evening of mid-October and encountered almost no other vehicles. Locals noted that on clear nights, you can gaze at Hakodateyama in the distance and even spot the twinkling lights of squid-fishing boats offshore, creating a truly atmospheric experience.

It’s important to note that the Jōdai Ranch Observation Deck, situated halfway up the mountain, is prone to icy road conditions in winter. Therefore, it is open only from May through October each year. Travelers interested in visiting may want to plan accordingly.
