They've only sold one type of sandwich for 30 years—ham and egg with their homemade peanut butter spread!

Qingguang Market is also a place Old K often hangs out, because it’s really convenient—there’s food available almost any time of day, some stalls even stay open until two or three in the morning.

Today we’re introducing Ah Xiang Sandwich Shop, located next to Qingguang Park. The selection here is super simple—they only sell ham and egg sandwiches, and drinks are limited to coffee and Ovaltine. But the fact that they’ve been selling just one kind of sandwich for over thirty years must mean they have something special going on.

There’s also a kitty you can watch here—probably raised by the owner. It sits right across from the sandwich stall and isn’t afraid of people. When Old K took a photo of the kitty, it even turned its head to look XD

But after just one photo, the kitty was ready to nap XD

The egg is freshly fried, cooked up in no time—such skilled technique.

You can choose whether or not to have the sandwich crusts cut off. Old K opted for the cut edges. Unlike regular breakfast shop sandwiches that usually come with mayonnaise, this one has two kinds of spreads—one side has mayonnaise, the other has peanut butter.

Ham and Egg Sandwich (NT$45)

The owner specially arranged the sandwich nicely for Old K to take photos. She also mentioned that both the peanut butter and mayonnaise are homemade, and the cucumber is pre-pickled. It definitely tastes different from regular breakfast shop sandwiches—the addition of peanut butter gives off an enticing aroma. The mayonnaise isn’t too sweet, paired with pickled cucumber, tender egg, and ham. It’s just simple ingredients, but you can really feel the care put into it. No wonder they’ve been selling it for so long. After eating, you’ll likely get thirsty—time to head over to Shuangcheng Street for a drink.

Just take a turn around the corner and you’ll find Shuangcheng Street, lined with food stalls. Stop by Gao Ji Ice—a shop that’s been around for nearly 50 years. Old K had actually wanted to try their drinks for a while but kept putting it off until summer was almost over XD

This place mainly sells drinks and juices. In winter, they also offer hot beverages. Prices are really affordable—Old K bought a large cup of starfruit juice for just NT$20. But one thing to note: the boss seems hard of hearing, so just point at the menu item you want, and then indicate how many cups, and they’ll understand. Online reviews suggest there might be more than one boss, and perhaps one of them has hearing difficulties. Also, online listings show business hours from 5 p.m. to midnight, but Old K arrived around 10 a.m. and they had just opened, so the exact hours are uncertain XD

Starfruit Juice (NT$20)
A 500cc cup of starfruit juice for just NT$20 is really cheap, and the flavor is rich and intense. That sweet-and-sour, thirst-quenching taste is absolutely wonderful.

Old K’s Tips: Both Ah Xiang Sandwich Shop and Gao Ji Ice are old-school eateries and definitely worth trying. Especially Gao Ji Ice—it’s so affordable. There are tons of delicious options at Qingguang Market. Maybe next time Old K will introduce more!
