Shocking news: Cherry blossoms on Yangmingshan Mountain have bloomed—blame the typhoon

After Typhoons Soudelor and Dujuan, Yangmingshan experienced several days of light rain and slightly cooler temperatures. Many visitors to areas such as Yangmingshan Park, Qianshan Park, and Hushan Green Space were surprised to find that some cherry blossoms had already bloomed. Why are they blooming at this time of year? It has left many people puzzled.

It turns out this isn’t normal blooming—it’s just a beautiful mistake!The Taipei City Government Department of Public Works, Bureau of Parks and Street Lights explained that due to the back-to-back typhoons, nearly half of the cherry blossom buds were triggered to sprout under the influence of near-freezing temperatures. As a result, many cherry blossom trees were knocked down, had branches broken, or lost leaves due to the strong winds. This disruption in the trees’ growth cycle led to cherry blossoms blooming in what is normally late autumn or early winter—the season when spring blossoms would typically appear.

The bureau stated that this premature blooming will inevitably affect next year’s flowering. Measures such as reinforcing the cherry blossom trees and applying probiotics to their roots are being taken to aid recovery as soon as possible. Additionally,the public is reminded that the current blossoming is merely a temporary physiological response, not an early start to the official flowering season.When winter arrives, the cherry blossoms will still enter dormancy for a period, and they will bloom beautifully again when spring returns next year.
