Taiwan’s classic hand-pulled chicken chain, Xiang Ji Cheng (Fragrant Chicken City), has made a comeback. Its flagship store in Xinzhuang, New Taipei City, began trial operations on October 24. Covering an area of 85 ping (approximately 280 square meters), the flagship store can accommodate up to 150 people. In addition to the classic hand-pulled chicken, the new Xinzhuang flagship store has introduced five new menu items, including soy-glazed chicken leg rice and curry fried chicken rice, allowing solo diners to enjoy a meal at Xiang Ji Cheng. Additionally, the price of the classic hand-pulled chicken has been reduced from NT$499 to NT$469.
Why choose Xinzhuang? Chen Qiaoyu, brand manager of Xiang Ji Cheng and the third-generation family member, explained that the previous Bali store received an overwhelmingly positive response, which led to the idea of expanding. However, she noted that finding a location with both good accessibility and ample space was challenging. The decision to open in Xinzhuang was mainly due to the nearby morning market and the nearby Siwei Market in the evening, ensuring steady foot traffic throughout the day. The 85-ping flagship store is designed with a cozy, rustic countryside concept to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for gatherings. Plans are also underway to introduce a Party Room in the future.

The most iconic item at Xiang Ji Cheng is the hand-pulled chicken. Previously, the Bali store could only produce 150 hand-pulled chickens per day due to equipment limitations. However, the new Xinzhuang flagship store not only has more seating but also upgraded kitchen facilities, enabling the production of up to 700 hand-pulled chickens daily to meet higher demand. The price of the hand-pulled chicken, previously NT$499 at the Bali store, has now been lowered to NT$469.

In addition to the classic hand-pulled chicken, the Xinzhuang flagship store has launched eight new menu items: soy-glazed chicken leg rice, curry fried chicken rice, scallion rice, grilled chicken wings, boneless fried chicken, sesame sweet potatoes*, chicken corn chowder, and buttered corn cups. Among these, the soy-glazed chicken leg rice and curry fried chicken rice are perfect for solo diners, while the chicken corn chowder is a revival of a once-popular item from Xiang Ji Cheng, representing a traditional Chinese-style corn soup. The grilled chicken wings follow the same preparation method as the roast whole chicken, using carefully selected 23-centimeter chicken wings so that even one person can enjoy the delicious taste of roast chicken.

When Xiang Ji Cheng first reopened at the Bali store, it introduced a creative “three ways to eat” method for the classic hand-pulled chicken. Now, with the opening of the Xinzhuang flagship store, a new “one chicken, three ways” concept has been launched. The first way is to enjoy the chicken in its original flavor. The second way is to pair it with chicken juice and the store’s signature specially blended pepper salt. The third way is to serve it with a newly developed special spicy sauce, offering a more diverse range of flavors. Additionally, the newly introduced scallion rice also has three ways to enjoy: the first is to eat it plain, the second is to mix it with the hand-pulled chicken juice and meat, and the third is to customize it by adding chicken juice, spicy sauce, and chicken according to personal preference.
