Unwritten Rule 10 [At Nipponbashi, haggling is common knowledge.]

When people from Osaka marry or settle down with those from other prefectures and start a new life, they inevitably need to buy furniture and electronics. At this point, newlyweds often end up arguing—due to differences in haggling culture. To buy electronics in Osaka, go to Nipponbashi. It’s like how people head to Akihabara in Tokyo.

Let’s say you’re buying a TV and see a tag that says “Special Price $OOOO.” In Osaka, it’s natural to call the clerk over and ask, “How much for this?” Even if the price is clearly labeled, in Osaka, that’s just the starting point for haggling.

“Can’t you bring it down to this price?” After some back-and-forth negotiation, the price is finally settled. But an Osakan won’t stop there: “Well, it’s about the right price. But isn’t this a display model? How much of a discount can you give me?” They keep pushing until they wear the seller down. And then comes the final move: “So, do you throw in any freebies?”

If the seller isn’t from Osaka, they might either get angry or sheepishly beg for mercy after being haggled down to such an extent. But that’s the authentic Osaka-style haggling technique at Nipponbashi. Most electronics shops in Nipponbashi post signs saying “If you find our product even one yen more expensive than another store, please let us know,” along with clear disclaimers such as “Only applicable with a physical ad (within one week)” or “Cannot match online prices.”

Shop owners are ready for the challenge, mentally prepared with a “Bring it on!” attitude. So, if you’re the type who hates hassle or cares too much about face, it won’t work here. When shopping at Nipponbashi, you’ve got to fight for the best deal till the very end.
