Belgian man falls for Thailand’s beautiful islands & opens a “feet-in-the-air” floating restaurant

Bang Bao Bay in Koh Chang is a must-visit spot for food, fun, and activities. Along the way, there are plenty of shops and unique buildings to explore, and you could easily spend half a day wandering around. At the end of Bang Bao Bay lies the expansive ocean — the jumping-off point for island-hopping and snorkeling trips. Hidden among the sea-based structures is “The Buddha View,” a Thai restaurant run by a Belgian that also doubles as a guesthouse and bar. The tempting seats that leave your feet hanging over the sea feature transparent tables overlooking the water, exuding a full vacation atmosphere.

Walking along the wooden boardwalk over the water, you’ll see colorful wooden stilt houses on both sides, each housing shops selling unique souvenirs such as postcards, accessories, and clothing. After turning a corner through a narrow alley, you’ll arrive at The Buddha View. Suddenly, the view opens up — seascape and mountain views greet you.
Built over the sea, The Buddha View was created single-handedly by Belgian owner Jan. Originally working in advertising back home, his life was as hectic as any typical urbanite’s. By chance, he traveled around Thailand, saw many sights, but fell in love with Koh Chang the most — eventually deciding to stay there.He chose to change his lifestyle and run a coastal space combining a restaurant, accommodation, and a bar.

With your feet dangling and swinging, your shoes are long left at the restaurant entrance, and you’ll need to be careful not to drop your belongings into the sea. With no concrete walls in sight, only a few wooden beams, the restaurant offers an incredible view — stretching out are emerald waters and lush green mountains, full of resort vibes.
Just from the restaurant’s exterior, it’s hard to imagine the owner isn’t a local. The dishes and atmosphere offer the classic Thai experience — traditional Thai dishes like som tam (papaya salad), seafood tom yum soup, and fresh coconut juice are all available. As for seafood — a must-try on Koh Chang — this place doesn’t disappoint either. Crispy fried squid, fish, and shrimp offer a sweet seafood flavor balanced with spicy dipping sauce, cutting through the richness nicely. Dishes average between 150 and 300 baht, making it perfect for sharing several dishes among friends.
Along the corridor next to the restaurant are guest rooms — four suites and three standard rooms. The simple yet comfortable wooden rooms, whether suites or standards, even feature cute elephant-print towels on the beds, creating a minimalist Thai ambiance. Prices start at 600 baht per person per night, and the next morning you can head straight out to sea for an island-hopping and snorkeling adventure.
