Traditional Taiwanese markets are wonderful, lively places. Mornings buzz with energetic vitality, while evenings are filled with delicious snacks to satisfy your cravings. From morning markets to dusk markets, I love the vibrant calls and warm human touch. They may not be as tidy or clean as Japanese markets, but there's a uniquely Taiwanese charm in their lively disorder—after all, these are people working hard to make a living.
Recently, a netizen recommended an affordable and tasty Thai eatery in this market. I took advantage of a free afternoon to check it out. It’s run by three young people and called “Mr. Thai Creative Thai Cuisine,” conveniently located just across the street from the market. I was curious why they’d open a Thai restaurant in a traditional market, but I was too rushed to ask (though this market, Wenxin First Dusk Market, isn’t actually very close to Wenxin Road).

Their Facebook page is named ‘MR Thai Creative Thai Cuisine,’ but the banner outside says ‘Affordable Premium Thai Cuisine.’ Business hours are split between lunch and dinner. Since it’s a dusk market, the area only gets bustling in the afternoon. The row of stalls outside serves hot meals, though all the food stalls here share a common set of tables.

Being basically a street food stall, you can come as early as 4 p.m. It’s rare to find Thai food at a traditional market. The wall nearby is amusingly covered with lots of signatures—it seems like a popular spot with many regulars.

By 4 p.m., we weren’t the only ones drawn by the aroma—several other customers had also arrived right on time. It was a bit early for dinner, and though there were menus, they didn’t list prices. You can just go to the counter and pick up an order sheet to place your order.

The prices were indeed as cheap as the netizen said. The most expensive item was around 150 NT for fish dishes, but most were under 100 NT. Portions for each dish or noodle were quite generous, so the pricing felt very reasonable. Of course, taste matters more. Dishes like Pad Kra Pao Pork over Rice or Chicken Curry Rice could be ordered without rice if you preferred, just specify when ordering.

【Single Meal │ Thai Street-Style Fried Rice Noodles │ 85 NT】
I hesitated between fried instant noodles and rice noodles—truth be told, I love both Kinmen-style and Tainan-style fried noodles—but I went with the recommended rice noodles. They didn’t disappoint. The generous portion and hearty amount of noodles already scored high in my book (I’m easy to please). These weren’t the wide, flat rice noodles I’m used to—they were thinner and springier, which is less common.

Maybe I just haven’t had many types of rice noodles. There were also some water spinach, pork slices, egg, peanuts, and chili. The color looked rich and the aroma inviting, though the flavor balanced mild acidity and slight spiciness without either being too intense—just right for those who can’t handle strong sour or spicy tastes. Honestly, the taste was pretty good; I just prefer stronger flavors. It wasn’t greasy at all, had great texture, especially the springy rice noodles. Though listed as a single serving, I think two people could easily share one bowl and add two more dishes.

【Thai Sour Soup │ Complimentary】
The server brought over this bowl of soup as a complimentary gift—I think? I honestly forgot to ask and don’t recall if it was a free soup with noodles or part of a promotion. The flavor was mild, with a slight tang that was still enjoyable. Considering how big the portion was, getting a free soup with your noodles makes the price even more unbeatable.

【Stir-Fried │ Shrimp Paste Water Spinach │ 80 NT】
A classic Thai dish—the key lies in how well the shrimp paste flavor is balanced. Not everyone loves shrimp paste, but I do, even when it’s strong. Mr. Thai’s version is milder, richer than what you typically get at budget Thai spots. The portion of greens wasn’t skimpy either. I found it quite tasty, though I’d have liked a bit more heat—even though there were already visible chili bits.

【Stir-Fried │ Pickled Mustard Greens & Spicy Minced Pork (Pad Kra Pao) │ 130 NT】
Pad Kra Pao comes in two styles → ‘Pickled Mustard Greens’ or ‘Spicy Stir-Fried.’ The server said both are spicy, just differing in heat level, but the pickled mustard greens add an extra layer of flavor. That tanginess was pleasantly smooth and complemented the mild spice. What really stood out was the generous portion of minced pork—rare for a budget Pad Kra Pao.

Every bite was full of juicy ground meat, no filler here. While the ‘Pad Kra Pao’ aroma wasn’t super strong, the taste was still satisfying. Honestly, I could probably eat three bowls of rice with this.

【Stir-Fried │ Green Curry Chicken │ 125 NT】
This dish wasn’t on the regular menu (which only listed green curry chicken over rice), so the server said we had to write it in manually if ordering it separately. Like the Pad Kra Pao, it came with a generous portion of chicken and thick sauce—creamy with a touch of spice.

The chicken was quite tasty, and this dish would also pair well with rice—easily another two or three bowls.

Only two of us came this time, so we couldn’t try heavier dishes like steamed fish for fear of not finishing them. We stuck to a few classic, affordable Thai staples. Flavors vary based on personal taste, but overall, I thought it was great—especially for the price. Compared to other budget Thai places, Mr. Thai gives much more generous portions, so no worries about leaving hungry. Plus, the place is run by three young, friendly guys. My friend joked that good food looks even better when served by good-looking staff, and it sure put us in a good mood (just kidding). If you enjoy affordable Thai food without demanding 100% authenticity, I’d definitely recommend a visit. I’d love to come back again—here’s a quick review, and I hope to share more dishes next time.
