The Guishan Veterans’ Village Story House Reopens!“Come Home” to Taste Veterans’ Village Flavors

Relive the veterans’ village life of yesteryear. Located in Taoyuan, the Guishan Veterans’ Village Story House features a first-floor exhibition themed “Come Home,” created in collaboration with local Taoyuan artists, the Architecture Department and Digital Media Design Department of Ming Chuan University. It showcases human-interest stories and dishes from the veterans’ village, allowing visitors to experience life in the village.

In 1977, the Guishan Veterans’ Village Story House served as the office, meeting place, and venue for activities for the Luguang No. 3 Village self-governing association. However, after the nearby public housing complex was rebuilt, the self-governing association was disbanded and Luguang No. 3 Village was demolished. Unwilling to let the remaining memories fade away, former residents, with the active efforts of the Taotzu Garden Cultural Association and Luguang No. 3 Village residents, managed to preserve this veterans’ village story house.
The Guishan Veterans’ Village Story House is currently operated by the Master’s program of the Architecture Department at Ming Chuan University.Director Chang Hao-chiu noted that after the demolition of the village, residents donated unused items such as televisions and furniture to preserve the memories of the veterans’ village. These were placed in the preserved story house, transforming it into an exhibition center and a gathering space where veterans can chat.

Now, after a major renovation, the reopened Guishan Veterans’ Village Story House features the “Come Home” exhibition. Among its displays is “Veterans’ Village Cuisine 0? and Still Delicious,” co-created by local Taoyuan artist Xu Jialing and residents, showcasing numerous authentic dishes. She explained that these dishes are prepared using traditional cooking methods, and the elderly residents shared fond memories of these foods. “Come Home” not only presents these dishes but also serves as a reminder of the past, showing that these foods are more than just meals on the table—they are also vessels of cherished memories.

Local Taoyuan artist Qiu Weiting depicted the signature dishes of veterans’ village aunties through hand-drawn illustrations. Each dish comes to life vividly under her brush, making viewers’ mouths water. Chang Hao-chiu said she illustrated the cooking processes and recipes of the veterans’ village dishes, helping the public understand the flavors of these special cuisines.

Local Taoyuan artist Huang Yihua discovered, through conversations with local elders, that each of them had someone they deeply missed. She asked them to write letters to the “him” or “her” in their hearts. Through the layering of words in these letters, Huang Yihua gradually portrayed and revealed the images and contours of the people being missed, attempting to use these depictions to help the elders find the “one” they had been thinking of.

Opening Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00; closed on Mondays, open on public holidays. Other closure dates are subject to the latest announcement.
