No time machine needed—find your childhood memories in the colorful murals of the Yong’an Salt Fields community in Kaohsiung

Childhood holds cherished memories for many, a time free from the overwhelming presence of technology when life felt more “natural.” But how can we revisit those simpler days? Head tothe Salt Fields communityand be transported back to the joys of youth.

Located in Yong’an, Kaohsiung, the Salt Fields community once thrived as a hub of salt production. However, after Taiwan Power Company acquired the land, the area lost its former glory. The decline of salt field functions led to the village’s gradual depopulation. Yet, this also spared the community’s buildings from overdevelopment, allowing the traditional red-brick houses to retain their original charm. To let visitors experience the past beauty of the salt fields, the Yong’an District Office and the Salt Fields Development Association invited students from Oriental Design Institute and tourists to collaborate on a mural project early this autumn. By combining restored old houses with illustrations, visitors feel as though they’ve stepped into a time tunnel, witnessing the salt fields at their peak and reviving those cherished memories.

What was once abandoned salt flat land has, thanks to recent ecological conservation efforts, evolved into the well-known Yong’an Wetland. After admiring the classic architecture in the Salt Fields community, visitors are encouraged to explore the wetland to appreciate its natural beauty and breathe in the fresh air away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
