Breathtakingly beautiful: Japan’s most romantic wild hot spring “Golden Spring” – a dreamy autumn foliage screen

As autumn arrives, the Tohoku and Chubu regions of Japan are at their most stunning for maple leaf viewing. One of the well-known hot spring towns in the Yonezawa-Myoko area of Niigata Prefecture, "Enzan Hot Springs," is already embraced by a dreamy red foliage landscape. Travelers walk along the mountain slopes, entering the Otagiri Valley at an altitude of 1,900 meters through the misty air. The mountain trails are carpeted with a red blanket of fallen leaves, while yellow, red, and orange maple leaves paint the once emerald-green forests. Among the woods lies the wild hot spring known as "Golden Spring," allowing visitors to enjoy a hot spring bath surrounded by maple leaves — a must-visit maple-viewing spot in the Myoko region.

Enzan Hot Springs is located within the Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park, and its waters are milky white in color. As the area around Enzan Hot Springs has a ski resort, it attracts many foreign tourists every winter for both skiing and hot spring bathing.

Passing through the hot spring town of Enzan, you’ll arrive at the entrance to Otagiri Valley in Kanayama Mountain, standing at an elevation of 1,909 meters. From here, you can admire layer upon layer of red foliage. The winding forest trails, shrouded in mist, seem like the gateway to a fairyland. As you walk in, each turn reveals breathtaking views of the crimson maple leaves, and a waterfall gently flows through the maple forest, like a white ribbon, becoming the perfect embellishment to this natural beauty.

Besides enjoying the maple leaves, one of the must-dos in Enzan Hot Springs is soaking in the wild hot springs. The "Golden Spring" nestled among the trees is a local must-try wild hot spring, divided into men’s and women’s sections, and it’s completely free to enjoy. In early autumn, the red leaf forest forms a natural screen of maple leaves all around. Visitors can soak in the hot spring while admiring the maple leaf scenery — the ultimate enjoyment during the maple leaf season.
