Why are the toilet facilities in some Japanese hotels made of plastic? This situation has sparked discussions among netizens. Some users also mentioned that they find the material used in Japanese bathrooms convenient, so they even want to use plastic materials for their home renovations, believing it dries faster and is more hygienic.

Chen Zhaocheng, who is also the head of Tai Building Construction and Songjian Co., Ltd., stated that this isan antibacterial facility, but it is not very common in Taiwan. Many residential bathrooms in Japan are modular bathrooms,where the entire bathroom from the floor to the walls is a single plastic unit. The benefit of this is effective waterproofing. The main materials are similar to those of ordinary bathtubs, such as FRP (fiberglass) or SMC (sheet molding compound), and some tiles are also applied. FRP/SMC bathtubs do not leak, so using FRP/SMC for floors and walls naturally won’t leak either.

Chen Zhaocheng added that this material is not as good as tile, nor can it be scrubbed with a scouring pad or hard plastic brush—the more scratches on the surface, the easier it is for dirt to accumulate. Also,the feeling of walking on it being somewhat hollow is another reason why it’s not well accepted in the Taiwanese market.

Some netizens said the advantage of these modular bathroom kits is that they can be used immediately just by connecting them to water and electricity lines. Those who stay in hotels often know that bathrooms are the most prone to damage and require updates, so modular replacements can save a lot of costs.
