Don’t put yourself in danger — swimming in the wild hot springs of Bayan in New Taipei’s Bali is now prohibited

YangmingshanBayan Wild Hot SpringsLocated in the Bayan area of Zhonghe Village, Jinshan District, New Taipei City, the region's geology is influenced by the Datun Volcano Group. There are many sulfur vents and natural hot spring outlets created by volcanic activity, and the surrounding creeks are filled with white andesite rocks discolored by sulfur gases and geothermal waters — creating a uniquely scenic environment. This has led many visitors to dig out hot spring sources in the wild creeks themselves, piling stones to build makeshift hot pools for a soak, in order to enjoy the unique natural beauty of wild hot springs — unaware that they are actually in a highly dangerous setting.

According to the Yangmingshan National Park Administration, the natural sulfur vents and hot spring outlets in the Bayan area are not stable due to geological activity. Their locations and temperatures may change unpredictably, which could result in visitors getting scalded.

Moreover, the terrain of the Datun Volcano Group is steep, and the tuff breccia structures scattered along the edges of the volcanic cones are loose and prone to weathering and collapse. Coupled with the unpredictable mountain weather, there is always the risk of falling rocks, landslides, or sudden creek flooding.

Considering visitor safety, the Yangmingshan National Park Administration has designated the area as a potential hazard zone and officially prohibited entry. Barriers and warning signs have been installed on-site, yet some people still risk their lives by entering regardless.

The Administration stated that apart from violating the National Park Act — which can lead to penalties — putting one’s safety at risk in such an unpredictable environment is extremely unwise. The public is urged not to enter the area.
