Colorful guesthouses with eye-catching facades: Taipei East Inn and the Beauty of Basalt in Penghu

Guesthouses painted in bold, vibrant colors are sure to catch the eye, making them an important factor when travelers are choosing where to stay. In Taitung and Penghu, there are such playful and bright guesthouses. Taipei East Inn is an affordable budget option that attracts visitors with its reasonable prices, while the Beauty of Basalt in Penghu also features a richly colored facade, with a composition of red, yellow, and blue outlined in black — a design that leaves a lasting first impression.

Taipei East Innis a newly built five-story elevator building completed in 2015, located about 800 meters from Taitung Railway Station. Manager Ms. Lai mentioned that transportation is convenient, with a roughly eight-minute walk to the station. Interestingly, this guesthousewas even visited by singer Pig Head on the evening of the 5th.

Ms. Lai said that the colorful facade of the guesthouse was mainly designed by the owner himself. The design motivation came from the owner’s wife who loves white. Wanting to create a Mediterranean style, the owner added other colors, resulting in what it looks like today.

The guesthouse is budget-friendly, with even its pricing being very approachable: NT$1,200 per night for a double room on weekdays, and NT$1,400 per night on holidays. The rooms are clean and tidy. There is also an older property — Star Inn 101 — only 500 meters from the train station, run by the same owner as Taipei East Inn.

Located in Penghu,the Beauty of Basalt guesthousehas a facade that netizens have dubbed a Piet Mondrian-style red, yellow, and blue composition, giving it a highly artistic vibe. The rooms inside are equally impressive, having been repainted to incorporate ocean-themed elements, with ocean-blue painted walls that create a very cute maritime feel.

The owner of the Beauty of Basalt guesthouse said that the basalt in Penghu contains colorful patterns. This concept was originally proposed to the designer, and the final collaborative vision became the current facade. The pricing at the Beauty of Basalt in Penghu is also kept affordable, with rates around the NT$2,000 range. There are seven rooms in total, which is considered budget-friendly for the area, and the quality provided is very comfortable.
